Re-zinc engine bolts
« on: August 06, 2009, 06:25:50 AM »
Hello all.
Some of the engine bolts on the CB750 K7 I'm rebuilding are a bit rusty, and I was thinking on putting new zinc on them. I wonder if it would be a problem on the bolt threads, which could get bigger with the zinc layer, causing damage to aluminum engine threads.

Thanks for your help.

Wire brush them down first, like with a wire wheel on a bench grinder or in a drill that's clamped to a bench. Then they should be fine. The threaded portion doesn't really need zinc where the nut or threads are going to be engaged, if you first oil or grease them (which should be done, anyway  ;) ).

You mean, after having them re-zinced?

Yep. Threads on bolts shuld always be oiled or greased before assembly. Few actually do this, but it makes torquing far more accurate.

Would a little anti-seize be as good as oil or grease?

Anti seize is very good. moly-coat is fine, and I use a mild loctite where I expect extra vibrations. The point is to have the threads smoothly interface with each other so you get an proper torque value. I am sure you turned a bolt by hand and felt tight spots. After the bolt is properly seated the coating will help prevent the two disimiliar metals from reacting with each other and freezing the bolt in place.

Coat them with Super-Alloy Z, they'll be indestructible!    ;D  Guess you're nowhere near Mt Fuji, though.
