Looks great mate, but why 8 months? My local chromer has a 3 day turnaround? Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Got it done at Calco Plating In Chicago.
Show Chrome Finnish.

Terry:
It wouldnt have taken so long but i changed my mind and changed platers and then one of the plating shops dropped the tank and had to send it out to get fixed.

Still not too happy with the job they did. The bottom of the tank is rusty. So thats not good and there are some little pits on the top and some mystery dents.

I'm bringing it back to them tomorrow to get them to re-do it on the double.
Riding season is wasting away!

Looks nice, dude!

Can't you throw on a cheap tank so you can at least ride the bike while you're waiting for the chrome tank to be finished?

MAN that is nice!   Chrome gas tank, all BSA style! (only other time I have ever seen a chrome tank)

I have those too - they are sporadically listed on feeBay but I haven't seen them for a while.

I had a guy on an old Yamaha chase me down one day who had his tank & side cover done in chrome. But he said it was actually some kind of aluminum coating or paint? Is that how they do this? Looks killer though!

THose old BSA tanks look great. I wanna try to get mine on my 750 to look like a cb160, except bigger. Like a 160 on roids! The Triton tanks always look great to.

That's a shame mate, chrome aint cheap, so get 'em to fix it right. Make sure you tell 'em to flush it well afterwards, the chemicals used in chroming can rust your tank right out, and the "F" tanks were more susceptable to rust than the K's. Looks bloody good though, I might have to make a trip to my chromer! Cheers, Terry. ;D

So i picked it up from the plater again today.

He said that the rust on the bottom is a flash rust that is only on the surface.
How he explained it was This:
When the current flows through the metal it creates low current density areas that dont plate well. He said that the large smooth areas have a higher current density and so therefore plate with better adheision. He said that most times when you see chromed pieces like this that have "back sides" or "Undersides" (like old car bumpers) The factory would use a undercoat on them. Also most likely it rusted like that because i left it there for a month before i picked it up. I should have gotten it sooner and scotch-Brite'ed it and undercoated it.

As for the dents, They are really small and no one will notice them but me. They were there before i had it plated. I was almost certain that i had silver soldered all the dents and dings but i missed them.

I Told him that i will be bringing him more tanks to get done so since chrome is a 3 step process if he could let me know there is a ding i missed that shows up better with the first coat of copper so i can fix it.

I may have some tanks up for sale in chrome soon as my skills with soldering holes and dents increases so let me know if anyone would be interested. I could offer a much faster turn around now that i have found a quicker shop. I spent about 15 hours with this tank before i sent it out.

Now to undercoat and POR-15 the inside and polish the #$%* out of the rest of the chrome on the bike.
Thanks for all the complements!
I'm so close i can almost smell the bug guts in my teeth!

Very cool - I hope you start selling the tanks too, a very neat idea for a side business.

Chrome plating the frame would be really cool too but I bet REALLY expensive.    :(
