Topic: Blade type fuse boxes for cb650's

I posted this on the what happened to evo thread, but since there may be some interest I'm gonna give it it's own thread.

I have a 80 cb650 c, and due to the location of the fuse box (wtf was honda thinking??) we are kinda left out in the cold when it comes to the custom fuse boxes that others have offered. I haven't had a chance to look real hard, but I'm approaching the point in my build where I'm gonna be looking at the fuse box. From what I can see it looks like the easiest thing to do is going to be to relocate the fuse box under the seat somewhere (I'm thinking behind the left panel.) To make the installation as easy as possible for everyone, the way it would work is you'll still connect it up in the headlight box like normal, but the fusebox will have wires long enough to route down the left side of the bike to behind the cover.

I'm wondering if there's any interest ( I know of at least one member) in this type of setup. If I get going along and find out that I can actually do it so it will sit in the original spot up front I'll offer this option, but I think the blade fuses are just too tall once they are plugged in.

As for price, I'm just basing it off of Evo's price, but probably around $30 - $35 ish unless parts are significantly more expensive or cheaper (which will either raise or lower the price.) I'm really not looking to make more than a few bucks each unit, and will donate some money to the forum. I'm mostly just doing this to help out my fellow riders, and as a way to pay the forum back for all the invaluable knowledge I have gained from here.

did that on my 650, the fuse panel is just downright ugly. I have mine mounted to the side of the battery box and wired it back to the headlight. used the original connector as well. you will need a couple of bar clamps, mine came from a XL250

Did you use the bar clamps to mount the box or to route the wires? 

Just thought about his, but I'm not using the tool area, thats another spot, but I hate modding things too much. I would think it would be fairly easy to just zip tie it to the battery box, but since my bike is currently in pieces, I'm not able to check that out 

Guess I'll go work on getting it back together so I can actually come up with a prototype and see how it looks.

Oh, I see. My plan is to use all the stock stuff, but instead route the fuses to under the seat. Hopefully I'll know in a few days what this will require.

OK, I priced these babies out and I can do them for $35 which will include shipping within the US (anyone outside of the US that is interested, just PM me and I'll get you a shipping quote and take $5 off of it.)

The wires will be a similar coloring to the manufacturers ones, but I can't find an exact match. To get the ball rolling I need 5 preorders so I can get the supplies ordered in enough bulk to keep this economical and ensure I don't wind up with a bunch of electrical stuff that will just be laying around.

The boxes are 4 fuse boxes, they come with a water resistant lid and the connectors are all nylon covered, I'll also be using dielectric grease to help cut down on any possible corrosion or water getting in. The mounting tabs are at the top and bottom, instead of the sides. I will also include 4 10amp fuses to get you started, these are the regular size (ato/atc) blade fuses. And it will include enough wire to go from the headlight bucket back to the left side cover (or if you are going to go to the right, just let me know and I can include an extra foot of wire ). The wire will be in a black sleeving and you just route it along with the wiring harness. I can't find a way to fit them under the handlebars like the oem style as the blade fuses are just too tall.

Sorry I don't have a pic, but as I said, to make this economical I need to get some preorders to get the supplies, I can say it will look good though. For these first ones the turn around time will be 2 weeks from when I get the 5 preorders, so please don't try paypal'ing me any money till then. Is anyone interested?

Not long ago I converted to a mini 30A fuse on the solinoid.  Easy as can be... I left the barrel fuses for now.  I don't know what the engineer was smoking at the time but having a 30A fuse element you could not get anywhere else made no sense to me.  If that broke you options where sticking a penny in and riding to the dealer for another fuse or buying spares and somehow keeping them from being crushed while you carried them and a screwdriver.

Yes mount it to the outside of the sidecover.  Especially if your covers are nice
NO somewhere under the side cover so you dont have to unbolt the seat to get to them.
