Ideas needed for front-end 78 750F
« on: December 14, 2009, 11:27:04 AM »
I am in the process of doing a minor cafe treatment to my 78 750F.  I got this bike on trade this past summer and have been tinkering on it since.  It is almost 100% stock--with a king/queen seat, luggage rack, crash bars, and "grab-on" handlebars and grips being the only non-stock (but very late-70's) items.  I have a Carpy Dunstall seat from another project that is going on it, along with a set of drag bars and new smaller signals all around.  What I rally need are ideas for the front-end.  The dual-horn set-up and center light panel/ignition pod are just too cumbersome for my taste.  I am thinking of relocating the horns and ignition, running an earlier idiot light panel (the one on my 76 just seems cleaner) and lowering the headlight mounts by using aftermarket or donor pieces.  I have been checking out other forum members bikes and am just looking for suggestions to clean-up the front. I am def. keeping the dual discs and mags. :)

do away with the idiot lights and horn all together.
I can't hear mine honk when the bike is running, so I took it off.
get an oil gauge on the end of the log.
brights indicator? you know when your brights are on... things are brighter in front of you.
turn signal indicator? ...for what? they're right in front of you, and you don't have to look down as far. *blink blink* "oh it's still on.

I did away with my blinker module and just flick my thumb a couple times in a turn lane.
everything I say is pure speculation and
I have no idea what I'm talking about  ._.

I personally find the horn useful.  I have an aftermarket horn that is pretty loud. . . .  Here's some shots of the front end on my 78K project.  It has been "cleaned up" a good bit.  Gauges are aftermarket with built in led idiot lights.  Headlight ears are aftermarket alloy.  Front turn signals are flexible led arrays that wrap around the fork tubes.  Choke knob has been moved to the right of the steering stem nut.  I am running a GL1000 front end on the bike which gives me dual discs and spoke wheels.  Since the pictures were taken I have tightened up the spacing between the gauges and the ignition switch, also bringing the gauges a bit farther away from the headlight bucket to allow for a gentler bend in the tach and speedo cables.  I have also installed bar end mirrors and smaller alloy grips . . . . One issue you will have is the ugly plastic electrical connection box on the front of the 77/78fs  Thankfully the ks dont have these and all connections are inside the headlight bucket.  Some rewiring could allow you to loose the junction box but it will take some time and patience to do a good job. Have fun and I hope some of this helps!

eurban,

Very nice.  That is what I am looking for.  Although I want to keep the stock tach/speedo, and am going to run bar-end mirrors.  Very sano look on yours. :)
