Grit in the gas tank
« on: August 11, 2009, 12:49:33 AM »
Hi,
I drained all the gas outa my gas tank and there seems to be loads of grit sliding about inside.
How do you get it out? I've tried turning it upside down and shaking it, but that's not working.

Thanks
Andy

Hi Andy its a case of just flushing it out, personally i would take the petrol tap off and put some petrol in swish it around and empty into a bowl and repeat till you get it all out, compressed air might help when the tank is empty? , cheers Mick.

Did you notice any rust in the tank that would account for the "grit"?. If so you will want to address that issue for sure while it is off. Lots of threads, toilet bowl cleaner etc.etc. Good luck with it.

With a lot of these tanks it can be hard to get stuff like this out due to the lip around the inside of the fill hole.  Take a small vacuum cleaner and put on the smallest attachment and then onto this tape a drinking straw or a small piece of 1/4 or 3/8 inch vinyl hose and use this to suck it out.  Maybe tape a piece of wire coat hanger to the hose to keep it from curling up as it tends to want to do.

Thanks for the help guy's.
I'll have to wait until the wife is out before I attempt using the vacuum cleaner though.
