  • Tryin' To Slow Down "Time"!

I hope not, because my buddy in Fort Smith Arkansas, has made me a deal that I could not refuse. :o  Yep, I am adding a 1980 beautifully detailed Black CBX to my inventory. 8)  Soon as I can get some photos to where I can post them, I will. Here are some that I have from when he was starting to detail it out, after sorting out some issues with the bike. He was wanting to finish it out so that it had a similar appearance, without the cost of the polished finned covers and such.

I hope to get to where I can post some pictures of this one AND the GPZ soon! ;)  Getting ready to do a major cleanout of my garage, cause these need to be inside. My buddy has gotten to where he doesn't feel comfortable riding the CBX  because of some medical problems and I am glad that I am now in the position to be able to help nim out somewhat. Plus, he knows that I will take good care of that CBX as well. ;)   His looks an awful lot like this one. :)

Okay, enough of this, now I am getting ready to get my "project inventory" down to a more realistic working level and make an attempt to get something accomplished in the way of Honda (and THAT 250 Jawa) Projects. Got a bunch of misc. 2 stroke dirt bike stuff and Non Honda stuff to part with. Gonna be like "pullin' teeth", but I gotta do it.

Thanks for the comments guys, I meant to say that the photos I posted, were of another CBX that my budy detailed his to look similar to. only differences are that his (now mine) doesn't have the finned engine covers (but he did polish the stock ones out and do the engine in black) and he doesn't have that seat, but a nice stock one. the exhaust isn't stock, but it isn't a Kerker, I think it's a DG, but not sure. And it has pods on the carbs but not as large as the ones in the picture. It DOES however have the basic look and is a sight to behold (at least, to me). ;) Pictures of the actual bike, as soon as I can. I'm kinda loaded down presently and it's difficult to get much of anything done, but it helps keep my mine somewhat on track and at least temporarily off my loss. Just tryin' to get to where I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

hoodellyhoo, Thanks!, I'm gonna enjoy toolin' around on this one ;)

Thanks Mick, I think I'll be more relaxed on this one than on the GPZ.. ;)

Thanks Bob, I am told that "Every Dog Has It's Day" and I guess maybe it's my day?  ::)

Thanks Jeff, now I don't have ANY 750 SOHC parts and very few DOHC stuff either.  Sorry bout' that. :(

Hey Brandon.  Yep, it's the one with 6 cylinders AND 6 carbs as well. :o Wo n't catch ME tryin' to tune THOSE babies! ::)  I've got to concentrate on getting my stuff setup so I can once
again and then, I will get on with it. Thanks for askin' though. ;)

Hey there Simon.   Yeah, I'm sure that it COULD get some "Attitude" going on, given the chance. :D

Hey Chris.  Thanks man, good to see ya about. ;)

Thanks Havoc, soon as I can, I WILL let you all know how it sounds and runs!

My buddy really hated to part with it, but he k nows that I will take good care of it. ;)  I'm hoping to get some fine riding miles out of this one too!  ;)

Actually, they're not that torquey.  They're a short-stroke motor with pumpers in the carbies so they REALLY like to rev, and they sound so nice you WILL rev it!

The 6-1 Kerker pipe is a DG with a Kerker end-can.  For some reason the Kerker is a little better..  when all is said and done, they run best with the standard pipes.

The carbies aren't that hard to tune.  No 2 is fixed & you balance the rest against that one.  You should buy a vacuum set because the only way to get rid of the CLANK CLANK CLANK from the clutch is to dial in the carbies, and they go out of balance real quick.

Don't worry about the shims - they rarely need attention.

The alternator brushes wear out pretty quick, and the alternator "clutch plates" wear away too.  You should buy a set of "A" & "B" plates & put them to the side - you WILL need them one day.

Don't be tempted to up-size the tires - the standard sizes look small but the bike will scrape the footpegs with them.

Hey, appreciate the info. Doesn't SOME of the "Clank" comes from the the fact that the alternator is "driven" off of the crank, instead of being attached to the end like most. And, for the record, the engine on these rev like a Ferrari or some such, to ME at least. 8) At any rate, You are right, they WILL Strongly Encourage  you to rev it alright! ;D I appreciate the link and will definitely check it out. I've got a lead on a decent set of Stock pipes for this and, even if I get them, I will probably hang them in my garage, because I really like the look of the pipes that are on it and they sound great as well. ;) I was thinking that the ones on it were Dg, but they aren't. Can't remember what the name of those pipes is. It's not one I'd heard of, like Kerker, Vance & Hines or the like. I'm going to get a trailer this morning and then I have to make room in my garage for THAT bike, cause I am not bringing it home until I can put it inside, when not in use. :)

Sweet Bill! I had a 1979 when they came out and loved it. Sure they all have their faults, but that's what gives them character. I sold mine to buy the property that I built my house on. Sometimes I regret it....and given what the market is now asking for me to replace it - it may stay a fond memory.

And since this is the "other Bikes" section, here was my last winter's project. I took a break from restorations to do something a bit different.

One 1981 CB900 Custom

After

At that time there were no carbs on the old girl. Here they were later awaiting installation

Oops, I see that 6pkrunner has kicked in here:

Hey Thanks Mike, I'm pretty proud "and still amazed" that I have managed to be at the right place at the right time, to get this one and will post photos of the ACTUAL bike, soon as I can. ;)

BTW, I am glad that you put YOUR project on here as well, my email has been messed up for awhile now and I couldn't get all of the photos you sent and hope to get things squared away soon.
Great job on THAT 900 also! 8) ;) Sure has come along way since the way it was when you got it. :)

Biggest thing that IPLAN ON DOING to this one, will be to keep her in shape AND RIDE!!!!!! ;D ;)

The red version was what I had. I really loved it and easily endured the catcalls from the unwashed masses ;D calling it flexi-flyer and the likes. The smoothness and effortless rush up to 120 or so never failed to amaze me - well coming off Yoshi piped and cammed bikes that let you know ever RPM you were turning. Sure the alternator at idle was noisy but given that everything else was sooo quiet and smooth - again just character to me. Yes the short stroke made it a low torque engine, but the ability to rev and the Ferrariesque squeal of urgency at the redline was music.

I never got into the aftermarket pipes for them. The six into six was too Benelli and most header types were just too convoluted in routing - or were bent for the sake of pipe bending. Equal length extraction gave way to looks for the sake of looks. Well to me anyway.

A pressurized X! When the kits were coming on line for them I was getting out of the toys for the first go 'round to get the domicile up and running. But if I had kept it, I'd have to have it turbo'ed. I do keep check on prices and availability of them, but at this stage they are still prohibitive by my wallet's means.
