Check out Tires Unlimited.

http://www.tiresunlimited.com/ALL%20TIRES/AVON/AVON%20MC/avon_vintage_race.htm

I think that they can be ordered thru Tucker Rocky dealers also.

hi kevin, i would try avon tyres in england . they will send them to you direct and as they are straight from the factory you know they will be the latest compound and new . some of the tyres being sold out there are years old .

Thanks for the info guy's. will try them and also Avon Uk.
In South Africa Kawasaki used to import the Avon tyres but they no longer do. To get tyres down here for these bikes is basically impossible, Even the road versions.

Kevin,

you could also try Sharples tyres in Bolton in the UK - they are an Avon race specialist and sell some of the more trick compounds. Might be easier dealing with them than the factory direct?

After trying to track down several of those sizes I'd have to agree with you Simon. Availability is limited or non existant for the small tires. ::)

the factory are very easy to deal with, they make the tyres in batches and can tell you exactly when the size you need will be available , i only buy there front tyres now as the new dunlop rears are now better .
avon only do one compound of race tyre they call it club compound , they changed the construction of the tyre a couple of years ago which made it much better for a light bike

Avon do more than one compound in classic tyres, maybe just one in the modern race stuff but definitely choice for classics...

we stick together !

retired now sam , had an accident at cadwell 3 years ago and lost most of the movement in my right elbow . was doing icgp and forgotten era on one of my rotax 250s at the time  and was riding a tz750 for rustic racing . still had 30 years at it on and off and won 22 club championships along the way. still build engines for a few people and help roy flower at the classic club [ drinking all his tea and telling him hes too fat and old....... that is helping isn't it ] and joel williams in the thundersport series riding a 125 honda.
am in the middle of building 2 new waddons [rotax ] for roy to ride[ but when you are not riding them yourself its hard to get motivated ] and may let joel ride my bakker rotax [ if he would stop crashing for a few hours ]

I guess you are THE Simon Bartling. 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) I've seen you in action ;)

Richard Parker took first place in the Forgotten Era race after a close battle with Simon Bartling. When the chequered flag came out the pair were separated by just 0.36s, leaving Martin Nash-De-Villiers finishing third.

You may want to send out an email to the guys at http://www.bostonmoto.com/ They probably don't stock those sizes. But if they're available, these guys might know.

Weird - I was definitely offered a choice of compound - you learn something every day but now I'm intrigued...

There was a couple of classic biys using a modern Avon wet tyre for classic racing. Super sticky but not mad at breaking up like modern racer wets. I think Avon claimed it was a wet for the road if that makes sense. Have you heard of it Simon - I wouldn't mind a bit more grip!  :D

Kevin,

You may want to look into trying some of the Dunlop vintage race tires. I have raced on both the avons and the dunlops......and the dunlops are far superior in my opinion....awesome compound and with a gp style profile.

Used the KR825 racing in 200gp......no way my bike could ever out ride those tires...they stick to the track!! ;D

Here is a link to a suppiler I use in Florida.....great service and always gets me what I need fast.

Great info guys, thank you. I will be following up on those leads.

I do use the Dunlop KR825 front and the KR124 on my 400F racer, and yes very good tyres.
These Avon's that I need are for a couple of race bikes that I am helping a buddy build and he really wants the Avon's. one is a CB350F (re-sleeved for CB400F pistons) and the other one is a CB550, still deciding on the motor specs.

I've been using Bridgestone BT45s on my 550.  How do they stack up to the Avons or Dunlops?  New tires are on this years off season improvements.

hi sam  yes thats me , wasn't there a quote where i won !

simon   i think what confuses the issue is the road version of the tyre looks exactly the same as the race tyre . if you where to buy from a firm who mostly sell road tyres they would offer you a choice of two compounds , the road compound or the race compound

not sure about avon but Pirelli used to offer what they called a rain tyre [ as opposed to a wet tyre ] this was a road legal tread pattern but was the same compound as a wet . it was designed for supersport racing in damp conditions . these are only available in 17 inch . wets these days dont chew up like they used to , i think everyone has moved away from the nobbly style wet and uses the radial groove type pattern that wears really well in the dry . again apart from brigestone [ who make a 150/18 rear ] all wets are 17 inch .
if you are after a real sticky 17 tyre  simon have a look at the dunlop or michelin super motard tyres these work really well
if you have to use 18s the avon front is still the best by far but the the dunlop rears are now what all the quick blokes at the classic club are using  . dont ask about dunlop compounds this is a real can of worms !!

ryder60 the bt45s are great road tyres but either the avons or Dunlop's would be far better for racing

Simon, of course there is bumph of when you won but I didn't want to bull you up too much ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

OK, you win  ::) ::) ::)

SATURDAY.

Arrived at cadwell 7.30 am,it's a gray day and its raining! By 9.30 am practice begins and Its starting to fine up with just a few damp patches around the track. The first race is confirmed at 11.30, so onto start positions. Some of the bikes in this class include simon bartling on his 500 montjuic Duncan pemberton on a very quick Suzuki, and a pair of RD 400 yamahas, one being a fahron 460. The first race went well,no scary bits, times were not as I expected,1.19s to be exact, but hoped I could improve on Sunday.Still, I ended up with a third place which was encouraging. Second race was pretty much the same as the first ,again with a third place, best lap being 1.18.4.

SUNDAY.
The weather was dry and warm, the rear sprocket had been changed to a 40 tooth instead of the previous 38,so hopefully acceleration would be improved, and starts would be better. I really enjoyed this race, the gearing was lots better and I knew I was getting faster. Simon and Duncan were ahead but not by much, they were in my sights.Lap 2 and Duncan was on the grass,I took full advantage of his mishap which put me in second place with simons monty ahead.Duncan tried to have a go back at me, but I just kept going as fast as I could without dropping it.it was great to pass the flag in second place with simon winning. A one/two for laverda. Second race was again much the same as the first with the same results, second place.

I've seen you lots of time at Aintree and Oulton. :P :P :P
