Help in Colorado Springs
« on: August 04, 2009, 05:14:58 PM »
I need help in Colorado Springs. I rode up here from Memphis last week. I am supposed to be heading to heading back Wednesday, but I have electrical problems with my 1978 CB750K. The bike is currently at Apex Sports, but they won't do the work that needs to be done. They told me that the wiring has melted together and does not allow the bike to do anything electrical. I am looking for someone who is a reliable mechanic in the area that would be willing pick up the bike and work on it. My only other option is to rent a Uhaul and take the bike back - not really what I would like to do.

If you are a mechanic or know one and could help, please drop me a line. I can stay in town as late as Saturday morning if I need to. I appreciate the help.

Just how fried is your harness?  If it needs replaced, you'll be waiting on the part longer then Saturday.
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Hmmmm....too bad Jerry RxmanGriff is off in Sturgis and Heffay isn't around anymore...they are the only 2 members that jump to mind. They would atleast be able to recommend a decent shop I would think...

Anyone else???

Heffay's up in Lafayette, North of Denver, so I don't think he'd know much about where to go in Colorado Springs.  I'd offer some suggestions if I had any, but I've never spent any time there either.  Jerry's the only one I know there.

Last I heard he was gonzo. I suspect he will be back but took some time off. There is a thread here somewhere about it but I know some comments rubbed him the wrong way. Also he got married a few weeks back so I suspect he was busy with planning and for his sake I hope he is now busy being a "newly wed"  ;)

DD, if you had the correct fuses in your bike ( Im sure you had , yes?), the wiring can't
'melt together' except possibly around the rectifier as it is the only thing un-fused and connected directly to the battery on your bike. Have you actually seen what their talking about and can you describe what and where the 'meltdown' is ?
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,

Thanks for all the suggestions folks. I checked the list of motorcycle shops in CS that someone sent. After calling one the dealerships, they gave me name of a mechanic that they said would do a good job. When I called Apex to let them know who was picking it up for me, they told me they knew him and that he would do a good job of fixing it. He has replaced the wires and suggested the wires might have overheated because the battery had some low cells which was causing the system to work overtime to charge the battery. He's got it running and is charging the battery overnight. I am getting on the road in the morning and heading back towards Memphis. Hopefully I'll have smooth sailing for the two day trip. Thanks again for everyone's responses.

Once I get back home to my tools, I will take the repair advice some of you sent and see if I can get everything fine-tuned. The gentleman's name who worked on the bike is Jim Coker. He's the second individual I've met on my trip that has helped me out with the bike. Helps me feel even better about using small businesses over dealerships.

Just rolled back in town last night and finished with 300 emails. Forget any help from either of the 2 Honda dealers here other than Jim's name! If you're still around give me a call 719-963-3080. I haven't met Jim but I understand he is close to me. I also understand he is an ex Honda mechanic that works out of his garage. Curtis at Action Cycles might be able to find a used harness and I can probably get in touch with him after hours.

Jerry,
Thanks for the reply. Apex actually was able to help me out with a new chain, but wouldn't touch the electrical issue. Jim not only took care of that problem, but walked me through some items that I could do to beef up the bike's performance. He is a real down-to-earth guy and appears to be very knowledgeable about what he does. I made the two day ride back to Memphis with no more electrical problems. I now have some bike projects on my list. :)

Dane,

Glad everything worked out. Too bad I didn't get home a little earlier or I'd bought you a beer. I've been meaning to look up Jim but have never gotten around to it.
