They're not that bad, just go slowly and make sure you're going in straight.
Also, they're not kidding when they say "a sharp blow of the hammer" when you break off the tang. I thought I could break it just by pressing a little harder (since I'd had a tang snap on me prematurely) but it just unwound the bottom few coils.

You can also remove botched helicoils if you're really careful by fishing the top ring out, teasing it up a little with a pointed probe or small screwdriver, then using a needlenose pliers and 'unscrewing' it. Gotta be careful doing that because it's easy to wreck the threads you've screwed the helicoil into. After you remove the helicoil, just chase those threads with your tap covered in grease (one turn in, quarter turn out to catch filings, repeat repeat repeat) and try again. This x3 was my experience with my valve cover because for whatever reason the helicoils kept failing.
