Stator cover bolt sizes?
« on: September 22, 2009, 08:59:41 AM »
Hey.  Gonna helicoil a stripped bolt hole for my stator cover.  I've done the search, but nothing for the bolt sizes of the stator cover.  I'm guessing 6 x 1.0mm, but I just want to be sure before I head off to buy the kit.  Am I correct?

Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

6mmx1.0 sounds right but why not take another bolt from the stator and measure it.  Hardware stores should have a board with male and female threads to check what you have.

I'm leery about using those boards because more often than not some jerk has cross threaded stuff in it and mangled the threads beyond recognition.  I usually take my bolts to whatever size I guess it to be, then lay one bolt over the next and if the threads fit together perfectly (kinda like making them line up like zipper teeth) you know you have the right pitch, too.

True that/those +2.

Fortunately, the bolts are all good.  God bless the PO who rebuilt my bike with hex bolts before I bought it.  Should be fun giving helicoils a shot for the first time.

They're not that bad, just go slowly and make sure you're going in straight.
Also, they're not kidding when they say "a sharp blow of the hammer" when you break off the tang.  I thought I could break it just by pressing a little harder (since I'd had a tang snap on me prematurely) but it just unwound the bottom few coils. :(

You can also remove botched helicoils if you're really careful by fishing the top ring out, teasing it up a little with a pointed probe or small screwdriver, then using a needlenose pliers and 'unscrewing' it.  Gotta be careful doing that because it's easy to wreck the threads you've screwed the helicoil into.  After you remove the helicoil, just chase those threads with your tap covered in grease (one turn in, quarter turn out to catch filings, repeat repeat repeat) and try again.  This x3 was my experience with my valve cover because for whatever reason the helicoils kept failing. :(

This is the helicoil bible, brought to you by Raul. :)
