Should I Buy This 1973 CB750?
« on: August 11, 2009, 02:23:55 PM »
So this just popped up on CraigsList:

http://ventura.craigslist.org/mcy/1317579188.html

It looks like it's in AWESOME condition, I have a '76 already. I can kinda barely afford it... what say you? Should I try and talk him down, or is that a fair price (for Southern California)?

Looks to be in pretty good shape, so not sure how successful you will be in talking him down, but what the heck, give it a try. Nice looking bike. ;)

Yeah, how stock does the paint / decal on the tank look? I haven't been able to find any photos of the same year that match it.

That bike looks nice...  however, 2 grand goes a long way into restoring or fixing up a lesser bike and you might enjoy the process.

Hi, my name is John (as I raise my right hand) and I have a problem :)  My problem is that I love working on these ole doggies and if I were to buy a real nice one, I'd miss out on some of the fun and satisfaction of having done it.

It is stock except for the pipes. If he has rebuilt it or it has low mileage that might be worth $2K.
Non-stock pipes drags the value down a little. Depends on what all needs replacing, look for old tires, chain replaced, fork seals, carb manifold rubbers, airbox rubbers, price keeps going up to get to safe and rideable.

If you can talk him down some and can afford it I'd do it. It looks like a nice bike and if it looks as good up close as it does in the pic, then its probably worth close to $2000 or more. I've seen those bikes go for a whole lot more on e-bay that looked as good as that one. How many miles are on it?

It's got about 50,000 miles on it. Everything looks good, seems to be perfectly rideable, there were just a couple of things that caught my attention, I'll try and attach all the photos so you can see. The fins on the intake side of the cylinders looks like they've been ground down or something... maybe they all look like this and I just never noticed, I don't know. The paint shows some wear, scratches etc. but overall is in good shape. The oil hose looks worn and might need to be replaced, and there's a small crack on the left side cover.

Other things I'm taking into account are just differences between the 73 and 76, like having the petcock on the right hand side... stupid stuff, but stuff nonetheless.  And I totally can relate to preferring to put that kind of money into fixing up your own... once I got my 76 the plan was to never sell it. Thanks again for weighing in on this, I appreciate it.

Bike is ok....but  NOT worth that kind of money. The color leaves much to be desired.  TOPS this bike is worth is $700. Some might go to $900, but I wouldn't. Check out thread from Johnie on the K4 he just got. You have a lot of $ to put into it and by the time you finish, you will need every bit of the diff between $700 and $2K

The paint color may not be "that desirable" but isn't it original and beauty is in the eye of the buyer. I looked for the web site by Spooky Tom or is it Spookie Tom, where he has pictures of all the original paint colors for SOHC/4s by year with frame and motor serial numbers, but couldn't find it in a quick search. I have it bookmarked on my computer at work.

I'd say the bike looks great. The question, with 50K miles, is how good was it maintained mechanically? If very well maintained, 50K isn't so bad. But if not . . . . But, if the exterior is any indication of the interior, it may be good shape. Can you do a compression check, etc.?

I see a lot of post here about buying good bikes (like this one may be) for $700 but in my reality those are very few and far between. I wonder if those who were lucky enough to score a good bike at that price were just lucky and boasting a bit. I searched for an earlier 750 every day for at least 6 months in Cincinnati, Columbus, Indianapolis, Dayton and Lexington and the best I could find cost me $1,400. And by all appearances, it's not in as good a shape as this one. And I've put $300 to $400 into it (not including my time) already to get it safe and roadworthy.

I also picked up a '75 550K with 7K miles and very clean and all original a year ago. I paid a bit over $2K and aside from tires have not spent another nickel on it. It's a beaut and I love it. Did I pay a bit of a premium? Maybe. But if I were expecting to find this bike for under $1000 I'd either still be looking or have won the motorcycle lottery.

Here it is. BTW that 75 550k in Flake sunrise is mine! I put the pic on bikepics.com and i guess he thought it was worthy.. I was shocked when i first saw it. Im suprised there are still factory yellow markings on a 50k mile bike. Any way. "Buy the best and youll never regret it." So ive heard.

Root beer brown was a color for the 73 models.  My bike was that color originally.  You know you want this bike so go get it.

That bike seems, from the pictures posted, to be in a very clean/well maintained condition - especially for 50k+ miles. I would bet it was 'partially restored' at some time. Parts of it are too clean to be all original with 30+yrs/50k+ worth of use.

As for it not being worth over $700? Yeah, right. Someone hasnt gone looking for a clean/well maintained CB750 lately. The days of finding them (in a condition like this one pictured) for under $1500 are gone. It's actually kind of hard to find a 69-76 K model for sale in my area.

IMO, it's near the top of the current market value - for it's presented condition.

I know in my area I would be waiting a hell of a long time for another one to come around in that kind of condition.  In fact in 3 years of looking that one is by far the nicest I've seen.  Maybe in your area they are more plentiful but I doubt it.

Buy it then make it your's and for sure a year from now you will have long since forgotten about the $2000 you spent.

That is an awesome platform to start with or leave it alone and enjoy it.

Myself I would spend the 2k and tear it all apart.

$2K for 50K is probably a little much.

It depends on what the owner has done to it, if he has done a good amount of work to it, it might be worth that much.

I'd say go for it it looks like a very clean bike. Who ever posted that its not worth over $700.00, let me know where to find bikes like that in the shape this 73 is in and I'll take as many as you can throw at me. That 73 has better paint on it than my 74 K4 and I'd laugh in someones face if they offered me $700.00 dollars for my bike.

Thanks for all the input, it sounds like you guys are just as split on it as I am! I think I'm going to have to pass on it, I have a vacation coming up in 3 weeks and I do have my '76, and $2000 would go a long way in getting it restored.
