Need to deep-clean carbs - but no new gaskets or o-rings ...
« on: August 11, 2009, 12:59:28 PM »
Hey people, the carbs on my 1980 CB650C are totally gummed up, and I really need to give them a very thorough cleaning - I tried the quick spray carb cleaner and it didn't really help at all. So now I have the gallon can of carb cleaner, and I'm planning on breaking them all down and giving all the bits a good soak, following by blowing them clean with compressed air. The thing is, I know there are a bunch of o-rings in there, and other rubber bits and pieces, as well as the float bowl gaskets, that really should be replaced as part of this process. But I haven't been able to find replacements, except as part of a whole carb rebuild kit, which goes for about $40 a carb, and that's way more than I can afford right now. (The kits for the CV carbs are much cheaper and easier to find but this bike has the older slide carbs). So what should I do - try to very, very carefully remove the o-rings and gaskets so they can be reused later? Or just soak the jets and other smaller metal bits and forget about soaking the main carb bodies? Does anyone know anywhere where I can buy new o-rings and gaskets for slide carbs without having to pay a fortune? thx -- Nick

You really think you can save 25 year old rubber that has been attacked by gas and weather..and simply gets hard with time?

Now you know why you got such a good deal on an old bike, yes?

Have you shopped from online Honda dealers?  Western hills Honda perhaps?

they are a little less at Z1 enterprises.  I think they are $31 or $32 each there.  You will also need the air cutoff valve as well.

Nope, I checked Z1 and they don't have the kits for the slide carbs - only for the 1981+ CV carbs.

I thought that the 79 and 80 carbs were pretty much the same and that you could use the 79 rebuild kit.  I am not 100% on that though.

You're right - my bad! I didn't see that kit when I went into the listings for 1980 CB650. Shoulda looked more carefully ...  :)

I just paid $62 incl sales tax for 4 kits here. My carbs are the vertical slide type. The kit p/n for my carb kit was 16010-323-315. My bike is a '76 CB550F. I don't know if yours will use the same number.

They will ship parts to you.
FYI I happen to live about 14 miles away from them.

Let me know what you find with a PM.

+1.  I got away with it once. The last attempt was disasterous.  Do yourself the favor when you have them apart...
