(I posted this in the "For Sale" section but since the auction has just a couple more days left, I thought I would post it here too since not many folks are seeing it in the other area, in case this is a super rare item, and also I would really like to know the story behind it)

I'm not a CB750 person but I am pretty familiar with them, but I have never seen anything like this before - maybe a one off custom or something? I thought you guys might want to see it and I'm interested to know the origins of it.  ;D  (click on below link to view auction)

Of all God's creatures there is only one that cannot be made the slave of the lash. That one is the cat. If man could be crossed with the cat it would improve man, but it would deteriorate the cat.

if you're going to go through that much trouble to remake a valve cover, at least make holes to bolt through to the cam towers...

The dude's a member on the HondaChopper board.  There's a thread there about how he did it.  If you search for it, you'll find it was actually pretty interesting.  I'm sure you all know that there's no where near enough metal in the valve cover as-cast to machine fins that tall into.

Mill the top of the head flat, weld on a plate of aluminum, and then mill fins in it.  It looks great.  Lot of work in there too.

Built for show Paul and the fins serve no purpose.

The bike will probably never be ridden hard, will never get hot enough for the fins to do anything so it defo will never need the holding down studs.

While we are on the subject of covers, the biggest mistake i made about 3 years ago was i had the opportunity to buy a clutch cover, points cover, and a cam cover in magnesium !  $ 750.00 for all . Where these used on the factory CR750'S ?  What would they be worth now ?

The Daytona bikes had magnesium crankcases, if the others were mag, I'm not sure.
I managed to get a aluminum copy of the genny case so anyone that could cast magnesium could do the same castings.
I'll be seeing one of the Daytona mechanics next month, if I can remember, I'll ask.

Magnesium constructed things are fascinating. . .such an interesting metal.

The old air-cooled VW cases are magnesium (Type I and early Type II, I think Type III too). Super light and strong. . .just don't let it catch fire! (and if it does - RUN and don't even think of trying to put it out with water. .  . LOL)

The old engine cases were aluminum and magnesium. The transmission cases were all magnesium. And you are right, either one on fire is very, very bright !  Will blind ya ! The fumes can kill ya, and if ya try to throw water on it, blam !!
Burning Magnesium is very dangerous, the only way to put it out is to cut off the oxygen to it. Just like the Magnesium and Phosphorous bombs used in Vietnam .   :o

Yes, it is nasty stuff when it catches alight. Ralph Bryans crashed one of the Daytona Hondas in practice and the photograph is quite spectacular.
I just Gooled "Ralph Bryans 1970 Daytona crash" all that came up was a load of posts from my own Daytona thread at the top of this forum :D :D :D :D :D :D
I was filing some mag a couple of weeks ago and collected the filings to show benly Ben what happened when you put a light to it. It was all to small and only flared for a trilionth of a nano second ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Turnings off a lathe are best for a good display. ::) ::) ::) ::)

The bug motor cases were all magnesium-I think the heads were aluminum and maybe some other parts.  The later bus with the Type IV motor ('Porsche engine" as some folks say) were aluminum, engine and transaxle. Technically the 'transmission' would be a transaxle. . he he he. . . (sorry, had to) .  and yeah, the transaxle was magnesium on the bug. I did old VWs for many, many moons. ... traveled all over the country in a '73 Westy and make money sporadically, tuning them up, still to this day.  ;D

Also, the sodium filled valves as found on the Porsche 914 were 'fun' if broken. . LOL  (same type engine as in later bus but with some differences like the valves)  sodium go *BOOM* (big flare up - also DON'T TRY TO PUT OUT WITH WATER!)

OH yeah. . . . aluminum powder is "fun" too. . .

My dad had a kinda weird friend always bugging him for any aluminum powder/shavings, as he would make his own fireworks. Illegal as he77 I'm sure but he was always the life of the party at the July 4th party, out in the country!   BoooooOOOOOOM!!!!
