New oil leak
« on: August 11, 2009, 05:29:47 AM »
I'm pretty much mechanically retarded so I apologize in advance. I'm about a thousand miles in on a top end rebuild and when riding over 60mph I have a slight oil leak. It's not too major. There will be only a couple drops on the concrete when parked, but when on the highway there is a pretty steady stream going down the side of the cases. Do I just need to re torque or am I going to have to replace another head gasket? I've attached a picture below if that helps.

There's no harm in giving re-torquing a try since you can do it with the engine in the frame.

re-tourque, but there is a good chance you'll have to redo things to get rid of the leak.  Did you do anything to check that the head and cylinder surfaces were perfectly flat?

I'm not sure. I didn't do the rebuild.

I may have done the same thing trying to avoid getting rear ended a few weeks ago.

I don't believe so.

Looks like the o-ring for the oil galleries... I had the same leak. I tried re-torquing to no avail and had to put another gasket set in her. No leaks since the new set.
