Fuel Tank Inter-changeability questions
« on: November 08, 2005, 06:43:18 AM »
Hello ,

As most of you know , my CB750 project is moving along , and I think I want to change the tank on my bike.

The tank that came on the bike when I bought it seems to be off a K8 bike , due to the gas door and such. I dont mind it , but my big brain is always thinking. I was pondering the idea about going with a era/year correct "peanut" tank , or maybe something else to slim down the profile of the bike alittle. I also like the longer tanks , such as off a 1977 CB750F.

My question is , with the mounting setup I have now , what other styles and years of gas tanks can I go with , without modification to make them fit ? I know I can run the stock " Peanut " style , and the k8 style is what I have on their now. How about the 77 CB  style ?
ALSO ---> Are their differences between a CB550 & CB750 fuel tank mounting ? Could I run a tank off a cb550 on my CB750 ??

Anyone else know of antyhing cool / different I can do ? I was thinking about getting a HD tank , but then I would have to fab up brackets and such. Wouldn't be that hard , just more time that I dont want to spend...

500/550 too small to fit others differ in lenght you will have to suck it and see
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

this is one of those situatiosn where you really should have your seat sorted out to. Technically all cb750 tanks will fit the frame, but since they all used different seats you might run into a small problem there. As far as I know the 1975-1978 cb750 supersport tank is a hair longer and may not work with your existing seat (who knows what will work with that seat). Typically the 1977-78 tanks don't work with the earlier seats because the mounts are different. It is best to figure out your seat and tank at the same time. If you want I have a supersport tank that I can check on my 75 cb750K and see if it will work with a stock 72-76 k bike seat

so I guess the next question is what seat are you going to use eventually?

As far as seats go , I have narrowed the selection down to two.

I am either going to go with a stock , year correct seat from Honda , or a cafe style seatpan from Carpy, ( as seen in the pic below ) , and have a seat made into it. Both are said to use the stock hindges for mounting , so I would assume that both would have the same dimensions.

I am kinda leaning towards doing a supersport " F " tank , due to it being narrow , and having a kleen look. Or I might just go with the tank that came on my bike from the factory , which i call a " peanut " tank. ( See Pic Below ) Not sure where my bike picked up the K8 tank it has on it now ?

Keep the advice/help comming.....

Are those clubman's on the cafe and do they not hit the tank at the steering stops?  I'm having clearance issues with my '78 750f tank.

Those are clubmans on the Green bike.
I snagged the pic from Carpy's website.

it all depends on whose clubman bars you have and how they are adjusted. I have a 76F and never had clearance issues with the clubmans, same with my 75K. I had a buddy with a 78K and he had problems until he readjusted them.

post a pic and we'll tell you what you are doing wrong.

those cafe seats would be awsome if they had a small crease to match the one on the tank. it would make for smoother lines and transition from the tank to the seat. i think i'm going to have carpy make a seat for me out of the #$%* house fiberglass seat frame that came with my bike. the crack head that owned the bike before me hacksawed the original seat mounts.

does anyone have any creative mounting setup for their seat? i'm not really sure about how I will mount it.
