Author Topic: My ridiculous bike buying continues.....BMW/Honda today.... (Read 3726 times)

Well, my buddy and I just went in on two bikes tonight, a 1987 BMW R80rt and a 1974 CB550. My friend is on the way here with the Beemer right now, and we have to go get the Honda tomorrow. The beemer looks to be a bit of a project, I think its been wrecked, as the fairing needs some work, and it needs coils, and an airbox, we'll see, I've always wanted to ride one, might get parted though. The other is a really clean 1974 CB550 that is rust-free, has the original exhaust, seat etc. but supposedly needs a cam chain, not sure if its broken or just stretched out, we'll see. Stay tuned for updates. Anyone know what the premier BMW forum to join is?

Holy Crap !! That is the biggest, ugliest seat I've ever seen in this forum, who would defile a beautiful BMW with something so out of proportion.

What are you guys talking about, that's why I bought the bike! Actually, agreed, if I keep the bike or sell it whole, that will definitely be replaced. Wish it were a R100, but it should still be pretty solid at highway speeds, I'm counting the minutes until it gets here.

Much to my girlfriend's chagrin, I spend way too much time looking at CL, but hey, if you want to get the deals, you've got to get on these things super quick. The bike got here, and it looks awesome, the fairing is pretty much thrashed, needs an air filter, and coils, and I'm pretty sure it will run like a champ. It only has 10,000 miles on it, which is seriously like new on a BMW, my theory is it was laid down pretty seriously a long time ago, and then sat for years before the guy I bought it from got it. I'll throw up some photos in the morning.

check to see if those "snowflake" wheels have been changed out . the original ones had some casting/metalurgy problems and had a nasty habit of breaking apart. while being ridden. i'll see if i can find the TSB on it in my papers and manuals. that said.............KICKASS airhead!

Yeah, one of the wheels has been repaired, looks kind of sketchy, we'll see how it works out.

Such a seat is a crime, the Po should be boiled in oil for putting it on such a noble bike.

My nephew has a K75S 1988. It a good riding bike....but if you break anything...BMW...stands for Break My Wallet. He has about 10,000.00 in his bike. 3800.00 when 2nd gear went out, 2500.00 for the bike original price, ignition switch went out 275.00, Had a bent front wheel 600.00 plus 300.00 for a front tire, Head broke...not sure what happened there...4200.00....and the list oges on. The bike aint worth what he has in it. I think before he got the bike it had been beaten.

I hear what you're saying on parts, supposedly the airheads are pretty bulletproof, and don't need much money to keep them going. Bummer your nephew spent so much, but from the sound of it, he might not have been the most cost-savvy consumer, I'm sure that alot could be saved on used parts and utilizing ones own labor, if I keep this thing, there's no way I'll be getting it fixed at the dealer.

The BMW dealer has him believing that you have to have special BMW tools to work on these bikes....which we all know is B.S. So if he needs a tune up...he runs right there so they can give him that and a oil change and charge him 400 or 500.00.

Well, my search for a good forum has been unsuccessful, looks like the BMWOA site is ok, but I'm not really into paying $45 a year and surrendering all of my personal info to them, its cool they have roadside assistance etc., but I get all of that with my insurance.

Mr Bucky, i don't belive those wheels are snowflakes. The problem you refer to, however, was a matter of gusseting the area where the "spokes" attach to the wheels. That was addresses in the very early 80's. he should have nothing to worry about.

Re coils; get used ones from a Harley shop and save a bundle. A BUNDLE!

Get rid og that ding-dong fairing and seat. The stock seat is well worth the money to get one- those bikes have fantastic ergonomics. You'll want to dump the stock shocks, too.
The R80 lump is quite possibly one of the best BMW made- don't bother wishing you had an R100. With less weight to toss around in there, that bike will go all day, every day anywhere and be a little smoother doing it.

The 2 best places I can think with the most bang for the buck as far as tech advice and parts sources is advrider.com Old's Cool Dept and the Airheads Beemer Club.

Should be fun to see what you do.

I have a 71 r75/5 BMW that i LOVE. clean that thing up and ride it a bit and I think any thoughts you have about selling it will be gone.
