Gas cap latch

High All
 19974 CB750. My gas cap is OK, but the latch is broken and it's riveted on. When I remove it by drilling it out how would you re-install the new one? Try to mushroom a new rivet without damaging any paint? Yikes!
Years ago on a different bike I used a little skinny bolt & nut, but it wasn't quite perfect either, a little sloppy, and it wore out quick (brass). Anyone?

I was told by a Honda dealer that's a recall item. The original latch could open in a crash and spray fuel everywhere.
No matter how fast or how far I rode, I couldn't leave her memory behind.

Several threads on this, popular subject.

First to your question. Hondaman sells a kit consisting of small Stainless steel bolts and nuts to replace the rivets, very cool. Search the site for HondaMan. He donates part of the proceeds to the forum.

Next, the item itself is discontinued to be replaced with the locking mechanism which is available everywhere and eBay for about $45 I think.

If you want to stay with the thumblatch as many of us do (the lock is funky) you'll need to find a good used one (I may have one) as many of the used ones are already broke and/or the finish is usually very pitted. And often they are very dear to the seller (pricey).

Finally: Yamiya sells reproductions of the thumblatch with spring and pin for about $120. The finish is perect on those.

when i reinstalled mine after i painted the tank i was able to protect the tank with a towel and hit one side with a hammer and hold a punch on the other side while a friend held the tank. worked well. then i read on here that you can get a small ball bearing and smash that in with vice grips to expand that end of the rivit sounds like a good idea never tried it though

also maybe try not to drill it out, use a very small punch and punch it through then you may be able to reuse the rivet. good luck
