Thinkin' with my dipstick Jimmy
« on: August 13, 2009, 06:12:10 am »
Is it a stupid question to ask how to check my (550F) oil? Do you screw the dipstick in to check it or unscrew it and dip it in and out w/o screwing it in. My Clymer doesn't specify.

CB550, CB350 twins check oil level with the dipstick not screwed in.

Friends don't let friends buy Honda mowers ;D. My John Deere is the same too. Thanks for the replies. I think I even looked in the owners manual with no help. I usually just filled it to spec. capacity but this was my first filter change for the mighty 550.

Never screw your stick.
You might need it someday.

The Honda 550 Owner's Manual says NOT to screw in the dipstick when checking the oil.

I think it's a historic Honda fact that you always want to check the oil level with the dipstick unscrewed from the engine case on a wet sump engine.

What Honda bikes break the pattern?  sohc 750's are not wet sump engines, so there's one I suppose.

Damn!  I read the subject line for this thread and started to get hungry for popcorn!  I thought for sure this would be an oil thread, starting with a Casteroil question!
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

But if you're using half synthetic and half dino oil, do you screw the dipstick only half way in to check?
