Possible/safe to epoxy a cracked coil?
« on: August 14, 2009, 03:54:24 PM »
I have a cracked coil on my bike I'm trying to get run and there is a visible crack in it which is leading to it arcing out, is it possible, safe or likely effective to epoxy the crack and have it function properly?

If it was me Andy I think I would just get rid of it but the experts will chime in. There is a guy here in Kazoo who sells under toddsgarage on E-bay who is a coil freak. Can rebuild any old coil with the new wires etc and is handy with a meter.Did you get the 550?????---Eric

It's OK to epoxy it, however the insulation on the windings may have already been compromised, and simply re-sealing it won't fix that.

Ohm it out, if it reads OK then seal the crack, run it, and monitor closely, that's the easiest way to tell.

Forgive my ignorance on this, but how do I check the ohms? Eric, didn't pick up the 550 yet, going to Flint Sunday to pick it up. Know anyone with a good head for it?

Using a multimeter, test between the two spark plug leads.  I don't have the spec handy but it should be in your manual.

Also test between the two input leads on the coil.   Again your manual should list the expected specs.

I have sucessfully done that with coilpacks on my VR6, havent messed with the bike but it can be done, I use RTV because it will flex with the expansion and contraction of the part.
