Arrived at the Town of "Whitefish" at 9:00pm
A small tourist town, the most I have paid so far $115 for the night.  It was also the 1st hotel with a phone, ice and pop machine ;D

I was right downtown, was able to park undercover and walk to dinner.

This place was quite the find.

The interior was, .......well my cup of tea 8)  or beer really ;)

I have only mentioned restrooms once so far in this trip, so here is the second
Get a load of this one 8) Funny stuff.

One last one on the way to hotel.

Making plans for the next day ;D

Bed at 12:30, the train whistle in the background made me smile
Good night.  Total 552 klms   340 miles

08/11/09
OD Start: 99891.9
OD End: ? 13 1/2 hour day. Seems I did 485 klms or 290 miles?
Started at 10:00am from Whitefish South on #93.  At "Kalispell" I turned West on #2

Hot day, needed an ass break, nice spot.Sat on the dock for a while and watched jet skis and boats.

I Like Waterfalls OK >:(

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This was a good story :)
I hadn't eaten and was starving, I had put off food for long enough.
I pulled into a gas station around "Marion". It was 1:00 pm or so. As I parked the bike I noticed a yong guy walking along the hwy. I noticed he did not seen to be interested in thumbing a ride. Parked when in and met the owners of the place. Sat down at a diner like counter and ordered some breakfast. Summer holiday for the kids, so the owners daughter was at the counter. Cute kid "Brieanna" , same name as my eldest.

I sit and chat with Brieanna and her mom and this guy walks in. He's the same guy I saw walking toward the station on my way in. This is difficult to write because I don't know how to put what happened into words.

He comes into the counter area and sits down. There is something in the air, something different, a feeling of uneasiness, anxiety, assurance weired vibe and yet strange feelings of hope.

I like to think I can sit and read a lot about people so I immediately go into that mode. I notice he has a baseball cap with some words on it. I start up a conversation with him, at one point I see his cap says "Walk for Peace". I went to high school with a guy who walked across Canada in  1978 and I started to put it together.

I asked him if was walking across the United States?

He looked up and said yes!
He looked as though he was a traveller in need, so I asked him if I could buy him a meal.
He was extremely grateful and with a wink and a nod to the owner she went back into the kitchen to make this boy some food.

His name is "Troy", we talked about his sleep last night under the porch of the local church and of his travels  8) Quite a unique experience. Turns out he walked from Florida to Arizona last summer until it became to hot to continue to the coast. He was now walking from Seattle to just inside the Montana border to complete his 2 year commitment.

We chat some more, I finish my food, pay for the "HEAPING" mound of food he ended up with slip another $20.00 under his coffee cup and say my goodbyes.

"Troy" asks me if he can take my photo and get my address etc. I ask why and he pulls me off to the side and in a very natural manner explains that the reason he is doing is this walk.

Said he got tired of hearing nothing but bad news on the media, he wanted to see if the USA was as bad as he was seeing on the NEWS :P

Explained to me that he decided he would walk the Country and see what happened.
He was looking for those moments where people helped one another without thought of credit or reward.

He wrote the 1st 9 chapters of a book last winter, and now apparently I'm in the book .

All let all that sink in till my next post ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

TROY "no Forest Gump" comments please ;)

After I left Troy at the gas station I had a wind at my back for a change. Credited it to good Karma. After a few mins on the road looked down at my Odometer to see this .........

  and then this..................

Went on for a bit and came across  one of thos "pull outs" that offeres a hike ::)
I decide a good walk might do me some good , so I head off on a 3 mile hike to the kooteny River,   Photo heavy .....sorry.

Large overpass on trail to get over train tracks.

So I have to edit something I wrote, now that I reread my journal.
I have no idea what the kids name was that was walking across the US, what I do know now is that after my hike I stopped at a town called "Troy" for a beer ;D ;D ;D ;D

It gets even better inside ??? 8) We just don't have places like this in Canada.

Anyone need some parts?

A couple of locals :o

From here I went south down #95. At "Old Town" I turned West on #20 and I will follow this Hwy all the way to I5 in Washington.
Stopped for the night in "Coleville, WA" just inside the WA/ID border.

Not the greatest weather, but I didn't get wet :)

I stopped at a bar and asked about hotels again and was told I should try and get a room at one particular motel.   Left quickly and got the last room. I also was given a spot to park the bike undercover ;D The girl at the desk wasn't going for my cash deal, so I just said..."I'll feel a lot better if you give me a deal ;)  She made me a an AAA member for the night at a 10% discount ;D  $57.00 GREAT deal 8)

Unpacked bags, made a call to my honey and headed back to the tavern for dinner.
Steak & Potato dinner was on special for $9.95.

Some photos of bar.......

Here is a real crappy photo I took at the end of the night outside.

I played a couple of pool games, and asked one of the women what the story was of the painting  on the nude woman in the middle of the place.........

Turns out there are more photos of her through out bar........playing pool in the place wearing her period correct undergarments........there is a story here.......... ;D

I got 2 stories from the locals.
- There is no denying she posed for a nude painting of herself ;D

#1- Her husband caught her cheating "what a surprise" and tried to shame her by putting her painting in the bar far everyone to see ::)

#2 - Her husband caught her cheating "what a surprise" and she put the painting up in the bar to shut her husband up ;D

I'm leaning towards #2 ...............
she did after all own the bar, and I was paying pool with her great / grand daughter  8)

Hope you enjoyed my day, and the local stories. ;)

LAST DAY :-\
OD Start: 385.7
OD End: 1031.1
Total Klm 646
Total Miles 380
13 - 1/2 hours  long day ..

Woke up early to crappy weather, cold and already raining a bit. Put on my rain suit and out of town by 9:00am.

1st storm hit at the top of the 1st mountain range. Same thing all morning at the top of each peak. Beautiful riding, lots to see though the Cascades.

Small town in a valley.......

Another beautiful view.......

I'm a slave to fashion ;D ;D ::)

No more scenic photos, I can almost smell the ocean and decided to give er sh*t and try for the last ferry to Vancouver Island that would give me enough time to make my last ferry home to Gabriola. 95 mph+ all the way up Hwy I5 and I made it with 39 Min's to spare ;D

Pulled out my last US beer and celebrated  ;)

I love this bike! This is it's 2nd long tour and it has never let me down. There are many jokes about the 78K, some in jest, some serious............
............This ladies and gentlemen is a a great bike.

My last 2 photos

Once again I would like to thank Jerry for inviting me on this trip. He and his friend Howard have been riding together on these type of tours for years and to be brought in as a 3rd wheel meant a lot to me. So Thank you Jerry,.......... and Howard.....thanks for putting up with me  ;) ;D

I'm out ;)  Hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did

Derek, I truly enjoyed this thread and vicariously lived through your adventure. I would like to know one thing, what was the most demanding part of a trip like this?
