nice! how did you prepare your bare metal parts before paint? I usually leave bare metal bare and just clear the painted parts, then use Gibbs oil on the bare metal. I've had problems in the past w/ clear on metal, but with the paint being so much better these days I might try it again.

i sanded to 600 grit, then clearcoated directly. were you using automotive grade clear coat? the catalyzed stuff?

I haven't done it in a long time. but I've heard a lot of people complain about yellowing and stuff even recently.

the clear I use now is 2 part urethane. Omni 2.1. or something like that. I haven't tried it yet on metal, but I like the stuff so I'm planning on trying. thing is Gibbs oil works so good and it's easier, so I've just done that for a while.

good quality catalyzed clearcoat shouldn't yellow anytime soon.

there's always something else...    yes, i need to send the trans off to be undercut. also, you may have noticed a little color bleed in the clearcoat onto the pinstripes... not sure how i'm going to fix that yet. either repaint or put pinstripes over the old ones on top of the clear. seat needs recovering... always something.

you could redo the stripes then just clear over again. you won't be able to tell the diff. or you could do them with one shot and not clear.

I just touched up some stuff between clear coats and you can't tell. I thought it might look like it was floating but it blends right in.

PM me and we'll talk about it. i wouldn't recommend building an engine with this kind of power without undercutting, which solves the tranny problem.

a little update on the mechanical here...

as i stated in another thread, i discovered the main source of the weak spark causing cold start problems: a screw had come loose on one of the pick up coils on the ignition. it was hanging just close enough to work when the bike was running, but far enough away to cause erratic spark when cold and firing off of the battery alone.

on to the last of problems... the transmission is off to be undercut this week, and while i have the engine out, i'll hopefully find the source of the mysterious oil leak that has been driving me crazy. finally almost done!!
