that last post was a lo-fi version of the pro pics. i need to buy hi resolution copies from him. there were a few detail shots i liked a lot that he didn't post there, like the shift shaft support.

i'm getting there anyway... some things still fall off, though mostly on the british stuff.  ;)

got my loaner trans from bwaller in the mail yesterday, so now i can do the swap in an afternoon instead of waiting weeks for mine to be undercut. that and finding the mystery leak, and it's a done deal.  ;D i broke my hand monday on the BSA.. as soon as that's a little more healed i'll be pulling the engine.

just changed the head gasket on my '72 norton combat i just picked up a few days ago.. i'm also buying a '77 ducati 860GT soon, which i plan to convert to the 900SS, or close to it anyway.

throttle stuck wide open.. brain thought "pull the clutch, hit the kill switch." body thought "pull the goddamn brake before i crash into that bush, full speed ahead." bad move.

broke the first metacarpal in the thumb... doesn't hurt at all, but the splint is annoying the #$%* out of me... can't work on bikes easily with one hand! i think i damaged the accromioclavicular joint in the shoulder, but they didn't find any breaks. that hurt like a mother#$%*er. my vet friend is getting me some cow sleeves, so i can glove up the left hand and still work on bikes.  ;D

tank, seat and fairing are mounted. i need to finish foaming the seat pan so my friend the upholsterer can put some vinyl on it... going out of town for a few days, but when i get back i should be able to install the cam and get the engine ready to drop in.

Where did you get these tank decals?

They were on the tank as I got it.. 1980 era decals.

I was curious about the support you have on the shift shaft: is it structurally necessary or did you add it because it looks freaking awesome? I was considering running mine without the cover, but I sure like what you did with it.   ;D

it will work without the cover but shifting will be smoother with the support. without it, the long shift shaft (goes all the way to the other side of the engine!) flexes and creates drag.

man, that thing came out awesome! the one thing I noticed is the stock inner fender is super visible w/ the empty middle section. since you are becoming a metal maestro you could make one with a nice smooth curve to replace the lumpy stock one. maybe have it match the alloy stuff?

just an idea, it sounds like you have a lot on your hands, though.

I finally started tearing my engine apart. one of the bolts that holds the cam bearing covers on was upside down, with the head of the bolt being held in by the oil guide lookin things that get the cover to line up with the head. so it doesn't come out like the rest of them and the cam bearing cover is held on with 2 nuts on top instead of the head of the screw. some kind of fix I guess.

other than that weirdness though, everything is coming out looking like new. I'm only the 2nd owner, and the guy who bought it in 71 didn't do much but let it rust. just goin for stock, but my teacher is letting me know about free ways to make more power. porting and 3x cutting valve seats and stuff like that. I'm really glad I took this class.

I'll start a build thread, but I'm waitin cuz there's not a lot to post yet.

I'd like to see pics of your other bikes...

honestly, i think the stock inner fender is one of the most functional parts of the stock bike.. it's lighter than alloy aluminum could possibly be, and does it's job perfectly. i see no real need to replace it except for aesthetics.

i don't know that there is HP break at which point you need it, so much as that you want your gearbox to reliably hold under power, especially under racing conditions. mine was slipping in and out of third. typically, 1st gear isn't cut so that neutral is not difficult to find. runs about $50 a gearset or $300 for the whole package.

haven't had a look at them yet to measure, but i'm pretty sure it's the big middle fork that's the problem (different than the 500), as it controls third gear. brent is sending me a good one he has in case it's the problem.
