toes. it's light though- 385# dry, about 405 fully wet.

wow. 100# lighter than mine dry, then, I think.

to be fair, i weighed it with a full gas tank and oil in the engine, and it was 406#. i calculated the weight of 5 gallons of gas and 3.5 qts. of oil to come up with the dry weight.

I dont feel to bad a bout the old drag bike now.  It was right around 400.

i'll have to take another picture. the guy took a good one, but i haven't obtained a copy yet. i'll say this: i cut mine down too much. it holds the shaft steady, but has more flex in it than i think it should.

thats good to know, I was asking because I removed the starter and would rather not put the original cover back on but instead make it look like it was never supposed to be there kind of like yours. Plus I like seeing the counter shaft sprocket I think it looks very down to bussiness.

Ok, a little tech update...

I received my loaner undercut trans in the mail a couple weeks ago (thanks Bwaller), but subsequently broke my hand and have been unable to work on the bike. I finally got it open now, and found some interesting things.

First, I discovered the gyst of my gear slipping problem: I mistakenly used a 550 shift fork with a 650 gear cluster, which resulted in incorrect clearances bewteen the shift fork fingers and its corresponding groove. In short, the gear could float in and out of it's mating gear without the fork budging. The two small forks themselves are well within specs, but the large center fork is .011" under. That gear was not being problematic, and having an undercut gearbox to go in, I think I'm going to call it ok.

Another strange problem: the bearing retainer that also holds the shift fork shaft in place was bent out 1/4" or so, as the shaft was forced outward by what appears to have been trapped air in the case where the other ends rests. I don't know the cause of this problem, but plan to drill a relief hole in the shaft to prevent it from happening again.

Should have it back together this evening, and then it's on to the mystery leak...

And didn't you promise me some killer pizza combinations? The wood-fires oven is up am rolling out a thousand pizzas a week (give or take a couple..)

it may very well be that the undercut trans would have prevented future slippage with the mismatched forks, but no.. the fix was to use the right forks.

i'll PM you some recipes.  ;)

mmmm, pizza. yes, I built a wood-fired pizza oven in my backyard (before all these yuppie places opened up in town), and moham built one to serve to the public. mine's tuscan-style, cooking the pizzas in 60-90 seconds at 900F. yum!
