rear wheel removal?
« on: July 30, 2009, 09:44:18 AM »
so i am trying to remove my rear wheel as i have new tires for it. there is a part that bolts onto the swingarm and the shock bolts onto it, only farther back, thus lowering the bike. well the problem im having is the bolt for the swingarm cap is bolted through the part that lowers the bike. the bolt is kind of recessed in a well where there is no room for a socket and no room to turn an open ended wrench any ideas to get this cap off? its the rusted bolt on the back of the part that lowers the bike just above the swingarm cap.

Can you just unbolt the shock and spin that whole "lowering block" with the bolt? Otherwise drilling always works  ;D

remove axle nut.

push axle though?  you don't have to take off the drop out lock to get the axle out.

Further, put a 1x4 board and shims under the wheel to take the weight off the axle while you drive it out. It may be corroded a bit and reluctant to move. But with no weight on it it should punch out easily. Certainly once its out and you clean it up, you'll want to shim the wheel up to where the axle slides in easily, you'll have several things to line up.

if you want to fix the original problem, maybe a hacksaw and chisel to get the head off, slide the lowering block out of the way, then you can get to it with a drill and penetrant.Or maybe the drill to begin with. With the wheel out of the way you can get a run at it.

Someday you'll want to fix that.  Can't tell in the picture, but maybe the bolt should have had a washer under the head?

Looking at it again, I'd go to ACE and get a chromed Allen Head with a flat washer. That would look sharp.

thanks for all the suggestions. it seemed to me like pushing the axle through was the thing to do, but having never done it before i wasn't sure. didnt want to end up on winning the idiot award. so it tapped right out of there and im off to install my new tires. now just wondering how the heck they tightened it in in the first place. great idea about replacing with an allen head. thanks all

if you take off the original mounting bolt on the shock lower and upper, you can then remove the shock (with the lowering link) and replace the bolt.

If the bolt is already there for the drop out lock, and then you installed the shock one wouldn't have notice the clearance issues.
