« on: August 15, 2009, 01:06:40 PM »
im adjusting the valves on my 79 650 and it has been a very big P.I.T.A. me and my dad are doing the valves and its has been very hard but when we adjust the exhaust everything is fine but when we do the intake everything tightens up now i have no idea why it keeps on doing this but hopefully someone here has run into this problem before i really need this help because all i have to do now is valves and put the exhaust back on then i can finally ride my bike again

Can you in depth describe the steps you are taking when adjusting your valve clearance?

BTW, these 650's live longer with an exhaust clearance of 0.004-0.005, not the 0.002-0.003 the book gives.
You loose little if anything for power, and your exhaust valves will love you.

when i rotate the motor over to do the intake valves i hit a snag like something is binding up or hitting something the engine turns absolutely fine when no valves or the exhaust valves are timed like i will do both exhaust and cylinder 1 valves and rotate and check if they are fine then i will rotate back and adjust the exhaust on cylinder 2 and it is somewhat fine then i do cylinder 3 intake and it binds up it wont turn over past a certain point

hrmm...
Have you VERIFIED(and how) that your valve timing is set right?

It sounds like your cam is 1 tooth out either way, and as you adjust the clearance for the valvetrain assembly thats when you start having your interference between the piston and the valves and then not letting the motor turn over properly.
You keep moving farther and farther from me....

Hey, I think there is a 550 rider in texas, .....
Shenanigins...(I think) the guy that posted the awesome cross country thread.

Mabey he is close enough to help?
Who knows.
