hey everyone have a ?
« on: August 17, 2009, 06:52:33 PM »
my 1976 cb550F has broken the right side points three times in 2 years what's the problem. it's only the right side one time it was the top of the points and the other two times it was the bottom of the points, I put a little grease on the shaft that seemed to help the last set to last longer. thanks for any help. Do you mean that the points face is fracturing?
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Oh, I see. It's either the cam follower that brakes of the "anvil" side of the points face.  What brand of points are you using?  Any overheating issues?

as far as points go I have had experience with aftermarket(stamped mounts, and stock replacements) for the money and with a bit of research the stock points will handle just about anything you can throw at them, properly tuned mind you. unless you are building a monster which you will have to go with aftermarket.

to me it sounds like a cheap set of points which are poorly manufactured. I purchased a new points plate fully assembled and put them on a poorly tuned bike and solved a lot of issues(still a lot of tweaking to do) but I have dealt with honda cars and bikes and factory parts will handle a lot of mods. hell a few years ago bisi(big time honda builder "cars only") broke 10's all motor with mostly stock parts in the proper configuration. if that doesn't say something for honda engineering what does.

I am a firm believer in factory honda parts, i have never had a stock bike but stock pats do make a he!! of a difference
Chuck dont need oil. Engines run cause they are afraid of chuck! ;D

At some point you may want to get a Dyna S and do away with your points. There are also tips on the web about usung a double spring.
