Was it a shop that normally does 500s? It would be easy for someone to think that inserts go there. Also, its common for shops to bead blast heads prior to working on them. So there may be a breakdown in communicatoins. Some would say you should have pointed out to them the need for masking that area.

My $ .02:

Photgraph it all as you have done. Tell them about it. Run it and say if it don't work you expect them to help out on the rebuild.

Personally I think it would be fine, as Terry's experience points out. But you need to go on record.

Lots of things should or should not be done, but they work anyway, been my experience.

I think you got what you paid for.  $125 for a valve job is cheap.  It is common practice to bead blast the head like MC said.  Part of the "valve Job" should have been measuring and decking the head (taking off a little material to ensure the gasket surface is straight).  I would at least have them deck it for you.  That will remove your rough bead blasted gasket surface.  Ooops on blasting the cam journals.  Their is nothing you can do about it now but try it and see what happens.

I took the head back to the shop and talked to the machinist. He said that he only blasted the sides, not the journals and that it was just discoloration. He said put some white grease on it and put the cam in and it will be fine. He assured me that there was no glass in the galleys. Ill double check when i get it back. Im having them resurface it. If he has to take more then .05 off will i have to get a thicker gasket?

If i were going to use a thicker gasket it would be the base gasket not the head gasket....
