I would use everything above the top case (including pistons) from a K or early F (75/76) with the F2 bottom end. You can use the F2 cam for better performance if it isn't worn too badly. Also, the F2 valve springs are stronger and will interchange.

Since the guide determines where the valve sits, after you replace the guides, you'll need to re-cut the seats. Any decent local motorcycle machine shop can do this at a reasonable cost.
You may have less $$ into fixing your F-2 than buying a KNOWN decent condition K barrel and head.

If I was looking to swap it:
Is there a reason I'd want a K cylinder, or is it just because it's easier to get pistons with a cylinder as well? Are the F rods okay?

F rods are fine whether they are F0/F1 (same as K's) or F2/F3. The F2/F3 have stronger bolts. As far as the cylinder goes you need the matching cylinder with it's head. The oil return holes are not the same between the F2/F3 and the others.

Mmm...that makes a lot of sense, and answers that questions completely. Thanks! I'll take a look around to see if I can find a full K top end in good shape to swap on.

Now in terms of the guides, is this also something I could do on my own? I'd take it to a shop to get the guides honed and the seats recut (if you guys suggest it), but the actual guide replacement is something I'd be willing to do if it's possible. I do have a fair bit of experience with rebuilding british engines and small turbo car engines on my own, but I've never dealt with guides before.

They have to be pressed out, and new ones pressed in. You will need to have the seats recut after pressing new guides in.

make sure, check again then check one more time to be sure you've gotten EVERY single bit of carbon out of the port before pressing the guides out. if you dont you stand a good chance of scoring the holes in the head that the guide goes in. media blast the hell out of the port
