Taking apart the rear shocks on a '76 750F

Getting toward the back end of my F1 motorcycle and rebuild.  Took the swingarm and wheel off to clean everything and install new seals/bearings.  Rebuilt the rear brake while I was there.

My question is now that I have the shocks off, how can I tell if they are still good?  I don't see how the spring gets removed so I can both clean the shock/spring parts and see if the shock still has resistance.  I couldn't find anything in a search of the FAQ showing disassembly and reassembly.

You'll need to fab or get a spring compressor to remove the keeper. Then the spring will come apart.
