How to get a textile jacket cleean?
« on: August 18, 2009, 05:46:30 AM »
I've got a Teknic jacket and it's grungy as all get out. I cannot seem to get it clean. Does anyone have a suggestion for getting oil, and grease stains out of one of these?

FIRST- go on Tchnics website or just call them.   Especially if there are water resistance properties, you can kill that using detergents.  If you get no satisfaction from that venue, go to a camping store.  They'll probably sell you a couple of products by Nik-Wax;  one to wash and one to re-apply water-proofing.  Most of their stuff is hydroscopic, so you spray it on wet, or rinse it in the washing machine.

I'd check with Teknic, but its hard to beat warm soapy water and a soft brush.

Anything tougher than that and you're likely to remove some of the weatherproofing, assuming it has any, which is why an email or phone call to Teknic is good.

PS Uncle Ernie beat me to it.

The jacket is many years old and the waterproofing is almost gone. Yes  i have some knikwax. I  think anyone that has lived in the coastal Northwest has a supply of the stuff. I  want to  get the jacket clean before reaplying the waterproofing.
Brush and warm soapy water has not done the trick. It's what's recommended by Teknic.

Yikes! Well if you're no longer worried about removing the waterproofing (since its gone) time to ratchet up the chemicals.  Get some of that orange/citrus stuff to smell nice.

I try a tub of your favorite hand cleaner, work it in with the brush and then maybe wash/rinse out with the machine.

This stuff looks interesting.  http://www.oileater.com/CleanerDegreaser.html

Sounds funny to use an oil to remove an oil, but I have heard of guys using WD40 and a scrub brush to get oil and grease stains out, and then wash in hot water immediatley afterward. I don't know if I would try this on a light colored jacket though.

I HAVE NOT TESTED THIS PROCESS...there that is my disclaimer.

I have always purchased black jackets, that way you don't see the grime and I just wash it when it starts to smell funny......

How about a dry cleaner, who can also re waterproof it. My clean is a green cleaner and does not use solvent chemicals. http://www.greenearthcleaning.com/about.aspx

You don't want to smell my jacket or helmet right now. They both have a very "interesting" smell about them.

Why not just put it in the washing machine and let it dry on as hanger.
