Road tax the world over, how much?
« on: August 19, 2009, 02:54:48 PM »
I just went to register (pay road tax) my 30 year old bike, cost $321.24 with $252.69 of that being Accident Compensation Levies and another $40 in "extra" taxes.
So to register my bike I have a basic tax of $24.50 which seems quite reasonable then the government adds another $297 in "other" tax!
My gas guzzling car a 4 litre Ford only costs $211.84 a year to register so I guess they expect more serious injuries from motorcycle riders.
If my bike was 40 years old it would only cost me $70 a year?
So someone riding a bike a decade older than mine is considered 4 times less likely to have an accident than me!
I would have thought that a 30 year old bike would have been classified as a "classic" and therefore cheaper to register but no, the grasping (non bike riding) members of our parliament see motorcyclists as a soft target for easy tax.
So what does it cost in other countries to make your bike road legal for the year?
I'm interested because I want to approach a few members of parliament to see if campaigning for a lesser rate for "classic" bikes can be looked at.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

You could get an antique tag. Here these are good forever. I have 4 vehicles counting my 74 750K4 and all have antique tags on them except for my 2004 Ram 1500. Thats the only tag I have to renew every year.

Dude, are you telling me your paying $7000.00 a year for heath insurance or motorcycle insurance? Either way PM me and I'll give you some phone #s that might save you a lot of $$$. I pay $108.00 a month for health insurance and $16.16 a month for motorcycle liability insurance. My health insurance is not through an employer either, I pay 100% of it myself.

My wife's company provides coverage for her, adding mine costs us $290 every two weeks.

This is not unusual for a person my age.

I just had a title transfer for the 75 XS650 I recently bought.  The total fee was $47.50 with $14.50 being the license fee(similar to road tax I assume) and the reminder the title transfer fee and sales tax.  This $14.50 is good for two years.  :D   It would have been $10.00 but I needed a new license plate for $4.50.  Damn those greedy bureaucrats. >:(

We also have the "collector plates " that are good forever for a one time fee.  I should look into that as all my bikes would qualify.  But when it's $15.00 a year for my three bikes it is hard to get motivated to hassle with the paperwork.

Probably around $200.00 for the liability insurance.

my "road use tax" for the saturn is 42 dollars a year i think. for the k4 750 it's 26. i still get irate paying nearly 100 dollars a year on a car that has turned nearly half a million miles.

In wisconsin, its $75.00 per year, same as cars .. yet we can only use the roads for a few months out of the year, hardly seems fair. Any way, not sure about the insurance as its not required here, tho that changes next year. I was quoted about $200 / year in Insurance for the bike, once I finally get my plates from the slow pokes in the state capital I will get the insurance and know for sure. I have not looked into antique plates tho I am going to, bike/car/truck what ever just needs to be over 20 years old to qualify.

Don't forget, he's in NEW ZEALAND. Health insurance is subsidized to a large extent there.  So, if you're riding a motorcycle, they assume there is a 10000000000000000000000% higher probability of getting some catastrophic, but not lethal, injury.  So, they will add the "health insurance" associated with this risk to the registration of the vehicle.

It's different there.   Also, $700 a month is NOT a big price in the US, for health insurance, for anyone over 40 (or a family), if you're talking about an individual plan.  A "group" plan, like at someone's work, is a WHOLE different story.   That's the issue here in the US.  An "individual" can NOT get health insurance, usually at any cost.

I don't want to turn this into another political thread about socialized healthcare, but this has been discussed and de-bunked ad nauseum in the "Health Care in England" thread.

...
An "individual" can NOT get health insurance, usually at any cost.

Back to the topic at hand:
In New Jersey, USA, motorcycle registration is $65 plus a $2 "convenience fee" for paying online by credit card.
In addition to that we are required to carry minimum liability insurance.
I don't know what a minimum liability insurance policy would cost, but I paid $287/year for my CB550K with very good coverage for liability and personal injury protection.  Oddly, I thought my CB550K was much less expensive to insure, but I've gone back and checked my records.

I pay $80/year in insurance for my 750. I think my registration is about the same.

I'm paying € 40.00 a year for the 400 Four in Germany, but that's only liability insurance and covers any accident costs up to € 100.000. The 550 im building up will cost the same in insurance because it's a bike that's over 30 years old and I've been riding accident free for ages.

Road tax is about € 40.00 a year, calculated by displacement.

Under 30$ for tag per year. 15$ per month liability insurance. Newer the car higher the tag here, and unless it has changed there is a lux tax on a new car depending on how luxurious! ;D

annual mot =£29.20 x 3 =£87.60

= £305.60 a year just for starters

Hmmm seems it's dependant on where you live in the world as to how much they steal off you.
I don't yet have any insurance on my bike, not even third party (those I might hit ;D) so my costs are simply road tax and compulsory Accident Compensation Commision levies.
I looked into getting comprehensive insurance for my bike and even though I have house/contents/car/boat/life/work insurance hardly any company wanted to insure my old bike?
The two I got quotes from were in the $250 a year range, so that's $321 for registration plus $250 for insurance= $571 for just one bike! (bike cost $1400 to buy and is probably worth $3000 max)
I have been riding/driving since my 15th birthday and (touch wood) I have not yet had a serious accident in 37 years, no claims...nothing!
37 years of no claims you would think that was a record worth having wouldn't you?
I hate to think of all the money over the years I have donated to insurance companies, I guess it's like a raffle you don't want to win but you gotta buy a ticket anyway. :D
Anyway thanks for the input guys, I'll still tap up the pollies to see if getting a "classic" designation is a flier.

In Iowa I pay $10 a year for my 73,76,77 Hondas, the same for the 86 GSX-R and $20 for the 05 SV1000S plates
Insurance I pay $360 a year for the GIXXER and SV.  I have higher uninsured and underinsured coverage because I ride those two the most.  Lower numbers for the 77 550.

North west England like Mick. No bikes on the road but these are the figures for the last vehicle I owned and the new one.

Driving licence, can't remember the cost, it was way back in the early 60s, only pay once.

Road tax on my old 1.8 ltr £185.
Ins, third part fire theft £205.
MOT test, £42.  Total £432.

New car, 1.1 ltr £35.
Ins, full cover £189.
No MOT untill 3 year old. Total £224 a saving of £208 a year with better ins coverage.
This vehicle was a £2100 off for scrapping the old banger. ;D ;D ;D ;D

Private health ins paid by employer with a second policy paid by my bank.
