ignition relocation
« on: May 07, 2008, 05:04:50 AM »
so i did a search on ignition relocation because my k4 has it on the bar and i was wondering if this is stock or did a previous owner put it there. is the ignition supposed to be under the left side of the tank? i would much prefer it there. any thoughts?

Yeah mate, left hand side under the tank near the steering head is where it should be. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

If we're talking 750's, there's a bracket that clamps onto the lower left backbone tube.

Okay, so the last post in this was over a year ago, but it has lead me to a couple of questions:

#1.) Would it be possible to relocate the switch on my K8 with the above part (I'm using a K2 tank)?
#2.) If the answer to #1 is yes, I would need to buy a new switch, right?
#3.) If the answer to #2 is yes, will an earlier switch plug into my K8 wiring harness?
#4.) If the answer to #4 is no, how different are the plugs?

The top triple tree I have put on will not allow the mounting of the switch in the stock location.

1. Yes.
2. Yes, you'll need an early switch.  There are two types, round connector or square connector.  See below.
3. No, I don't think so, unless the square-type connector is the same as on your integrated ignition switch/fork lock unit, but I don't think so.
4. Not too different, the wires will be compatible but you'll have to wire the early-style connector to your harness.  Or just hard wire it and eliminate the connector altogether.

This is the first bike I have had with the key located here.

I don't know weither I like it or not...It looks cool, but (pardon the pun) it is a HOT place to have your keys! :o

I always move them back, behind the cam cover, in front of the carbs, like in the pix below (shows how to hook up the Hondaman Ignition's black wire, but shows the keyswitch on the Hondaman special #1 bike). This makes the bike harder to hot wire, and harder for the novice thief to locate the key.  ;) :D
