Caliper piston still stuck!

So when I bought my bike the PO said the caliper had locked up.  I took it apart and scraped all the corrosion I could out of it and put it back together, that didn't work.  I took it apart again and used a brass wire wheel on a Dremel, it was a bit better but it is still grabbing!  I did it again and no joy.  Is there something else I should try?

replace the seal also you might try cleaning any corrosion up with a polishing wheel

Should the piston move almost as freely as when the seal isn't in the caliper?

It should fall out without the seal in place.

I know the piston moves freely without the seal in place, but should it move almost as easy with the seal in?

No it should take a bit of force to push the piston in with the seal in place and it should stay in place if you turn it upside down.

Your Honda dealer has the seals for 5 bucks. If the resistance is the same with or without the seal, your seal is toast or you removed too much material from the groove.  Not likey if you used a brass brush.

No, the problem is that the piston does not move very freely at all once the seal is in.  It is much better now that I've cleaned it all out, but when I took it around the block the rotor is nice and hot because the pad is not releasing as much as it should.

Did you put in new pads by chance. I bought 4 sets from TAS that were super inexpensive,made in italy but they needed alot of prep.Had to remove some of the brake material around the outside edges,or dress them up, so that they would fit properly and not bind up.Just a thought ???

The pads were all chewed up from when he tried to remove them or something.  I ordered more from Dennis Kurk so hopefully they will help.

When you get them just try test fitting them in the caliper first to make sure there is no binding and if they are too tight dress up the outside with some sandpaper or something so all will work smoooooth. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

I got all the parts and took the caliper apart again and took the wire wheel to it once more to make sure I didn't have to do it again.  I test fit the new pad and I would have had to press the thing in there if I wanted it in the caliper where it belonged.  I took off all the paint on the pad where it would contact the surface of the caliper and it finally fit with no binding!  Long story short it works and doesn't bind at all anymore!

... I did find out that the master cylinder appears to be leaking from around where the lever is!  Never ending!

You can get a rebuild kit for the MC and fix that or replace it with aftermarket or MC off of other bikes that will work.

Clean the pressure release hole inside the master cylinder reservoir.  There's a big hole and a small hole, when bikes sit for a long time the small one tends to clog up and cause this problem.

OK-He has a leak-whoops so do I be back in a second----------Make sure you do not have a bad line also. Sometomes a hydro line will let you put the pressure in but will not let the pressure release and cause the caliper to "seize". Found out the hard way on my Dodge Maxi Van on  200 mile road trip from the North one time,made it Home without hittin the brakes ;D
