Universal Rearsets for most older CB Hondas

Okay....here is an old post I had placed on some other forums on making universal rearsets to fit the
older Honda CB's. Most all the CB(twins and inline 4's) Hondas have
1" diam. frame tubes and this works great. I posted this a long time
ago......thought i'd repost it here. This is the
setup i'm using on the CR350 racer and i'm now see some of the
vintage road racers using this setup.....enjoy!!

Very easy and functional way to get some very nice rearsts
for most cafe bikes with very little metal fab or machining.

1. Purchase 4......universal 3-Piece 1 inch frame clamps from Dennis
Kirk(800-323-9280), part number=h27-036.......$5.99ea.

2. Need to look on EBAY for 1998-2002 Honda CBR929RR/RC51
rearsets....usually run approx. $80 per set. You will need the
rearset brakets(right & left), both heel gaurds, shift lever, & rear
brake lever with return spring(and brake light switch if using a taillight). You can usually find all these
together as a set or with only a few parts missing or damaged. I have
purchase a few sets with road rashed pegs for very cheap. Usually, you
can purchase some aftermarket pegs from the local bike shop for around
$20.

3. Purchase some smooth round rod(have to thread ends) or threaded rod($1.57 for 3 foot piece...approx) from
local hardware store to fab up the shift and rear brake linkages. I
have always purchased smooth round rod, then once cut to
size.....threaded the ends using a tap/die set.

4. Depending on application, you may need to use a spacer between the
frame clamps and the rearset mounting braket. On my CB350's I have
used a 1 inch aluminum spacer to locate the peg out away from the
swingarm for clearance.

Honda CR350 and also on my 1970 Honda CB350RR Inverted front fork

These look really nice.  Do you have more details/pictures on how you mounted the rear brake rod to the pedal?  On my 400/4 there is a tube on the frame that a splined shaft rides in and connects to the foot pedal to the brake rod.  I'm assuming you wouldn't use this and instead connect the brake rod directly to the pedal. 

Do you need to fabricate a special adapter clevis to mate up to the pedal?  Is there already a "cam" on the backside of the pedal that can be used to actuate the rod?  Should I get a right rearset with the master cylinder in place to scavenge some parts?  Thanks again for this post.

Heres some more detailed pics of the rear brake rod that connects to the rear brake lever. With the CB350t, I just made a new brake rod that attachs to brake lever at the rear wheel(you have to flip the bracket on the rear brake backing plate up). There are a ton of pic at my website.....look under CR350.

You can purchase the Self-Aligning Chrome Rod Ends at DennisKirk.com....they run $15.99ea. I used the Rod End w/  5/16"-24 stud(one on the right).

You can also find some rear sets off of a CBR FZR GSXR and make a adaptor plate.
I did mine for $25. and spent 2 hrs making the plate then bolt on bolt off.


The plate bolts off the frame the sets bolt on the plate.

Yep, i have issues with this sort of stuff.

Just FYI- If you have a 750 the frame size is 1 1/8" id. I Dennis Kirk was low on stock so I ordered from this place. No idea how long it will take to ship (def not as fast as DK!)

Anyone have a picture of where the rear drum rod attaches to the brake lever? I don't understand where the leverage comes from since the hydraulic rear brake doesn't use the "L" shape because they just push a rod up into the MC.

???

I'm still around...although not on here as much as i'd like.

This was a setup I developed to be used on the CB350 twins. The rear brake rod attaches to the stock master cyclinder location on the rear brake pedal of the CBR pedal. The throw of the leverl is very small, so you have to adjust the rear brake to accomidate for this.....or you can cut the pivot off the rear brake pedal and re-weld it into a location that gives more leverage on the rear brake. I have rewelded these before with my tig....and they weld very nice.

One thing you have to be careful with is......some modern rearsets on other makes dont have the pivot in the correct location and will need to be moved and rewelded.

Thanks! That's just the information I was looking for. I could see on your 350 pictures (on your site) that the lever throw looked short.
