Dave's "new" bike (cb350f) .. update
« on: November 17, 2005, 06:23:09 AM »
This seems more technical, so I moved it here from the open forum. If I'm wrong in doing so mods, don't beat me too much.

Well, it's been a fun few weeks. I think it's been weeks. Maybe it's been a couple months. I've been thrust into middle management at my day job due to an unexpected evacuation of prior management. While the overtime is nice...

Anyway, here are the the issues and resolutions (if any) on my bike:

Old issues:

-Blinkers, slow blink on left:  The blink has speed up some. I think there's still a dirty or loose connection somewhere, though I thought I went over them all. I've been thinking of replacing them all with fresh connectors from the vintage connector link in the FAQs just for the heck of it.

-Headlight, taillight, and horn:  Tracking the wires, I've found the lines leading from the switch in the right hand grip to the connector under the right side of the tank might be the issue. The female/power source shows ground on my meter... so there's a short further back in the harness... but where? My father's suggesting bypassing the short, and rewiring power to the switch.  I've also seen some ideas on this forum for rewiring the headlight. Part of me says screw it, let's get it roadworthy. The other part of me says it's cheating, and I should find the real source of the problem, even if it means pulling the harness apart. What say you?

-Tires, low pressure:  They now seem to hold pressure rather well. I've checked them on several occasions, and they seem fine.

New issues:

Tach/speedo: No worky. Where should I look for new ones? Ideas? ???

Carbs leak: Carb two and three leak gas in a slow drip. :(

Well, back to work.

Tach/speedo: No worky. Where should I look for new ones? Ideas? Huh
first of all do a routine inspection of the gauges.
check if they are connected to the cables properly. if so  then disconnect and see if the cable are free moving if not then spray lube insideand let soak  while they are soaking  then check to see if the actual tach and speedo moves easy.
if so good news.  if not uh oh.
also check tach cover/gear take out, inspect, clean and reinstall and same for the speedo drive.
,
I had the same prob so I ended up taking the gauges apart.  now they are working fine  this is a sort of delicate so check with other threads on this site before tearing apart.  especially taking off the beauty ring.

last thing, if all else fails,  I would check is here on parts for sale or ebay for gauges.  but check into the previous stuff i mentioned before spending money.

You might get more advice if you said what bike you are working on...

After trying a lot of things, plugging in two wires, and replacing a bulb...

I have headlights, tailights, break lights! Whooo hoooo! 8) 8)

Taking apart the controls on the horn, I discovered the wire fried and the screw stripped. :-/ Time to find a new horn control, maybe a clip on for the time being... or a bell from a tricycle (from the strength of the horn when we tested it).  ::)

Yep.  I used one of them on my old 500 when the horn wouldn't work during MOT (our version of your inspection)

The tester poineted me at the bicycle shop next door and advised me to fit an "audible warning device" while he wasn't looking.

Passed.

Then I fitted the Fiamms shown in the avatar - but that's another story.

Alright! Just got "new" LH handlebar controls, rewired the turn signals and horn, and BAM!!!

It works. Took her for a spin that evening and found the tach and speedo light up.

I'll try to take her for inspection on Monday, then run over to transfer the title...  8)
