How does it handle? I think this is very cool. I had an 07 yz250f and sold it for a 2013 wr250r and just the weight/power difference between those were a lot to get used to. (The yz being much lighter and more powerful.) How do you think it would compete against a 500 thumper? Have you estimated what the total weight of the bike is as it sits?

Well after being asked how much this bike weighed, I went out and bought a set of $8.00 bathroom scales from K-Mart.

Front axle is 82kg and rear is 94kg making total mass of 176kg (388lbs)

I reckon I could lose a few kilograms with lighter rear guard, tail light and rack.

Its very stable on the dirt roads.

I will be dragging it back out again this year. Just need to pull the carbies and put the big jets back in :)

Looking good Pezz, and glad to see the oil cooler in pride of place. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

It works well there too, Thanks Terry!!

Front edge is out further than the rear, so kinda like a scoop.

I was going to put a cowl on it but it works well as it is

Just prepping the XR460/4 to take it out for a ride this weekend, around 600k's round trip to Bigga NSW, near Bathurst, for the Tiddlers Rally.

Found this pic of my Daughter Grace and I at the Scrapheap Adventure Ride last year.

I really love riding this bike. It is heavy on fuel though as I get around 150k's out of the 14 litres when I open it up a bit. May have to pull the carbs and play with the jetting again LOL

Pezz,
I just found this thread .
I Didn't know anyone else out there would try to make a dirt bike out of a 4 . Looks like a blast to ride.
 Most excellent!           RB

Thanks RB
It is a great bike to ride and it is very stable on the dirt.
I extended the swingarm 100mm and that was a big advantage I think.
Is there a build thread on your bike??
Pezz :)

Not really, anymore. A couple years ago I had this idea that it would be a good idea to marry a 550 with a kdx 250 and make an off road 550. A few years earlier I had an idea that a 550 and a snow mobile would be a good idea for some winter riding, start to finish - 2 months and I was riding it. The kdx550 was a total disaster for me. Got most of it mocked up and realized it sat too high, was too top heavy, had a weak kawasaki suspension, and would be just plain dangerous. I should have made a better choice of dirt bike donor, I see that here in your thread. My KXD550 attempt was just embarrassing, a failure, so I apologized to the readers, stopped the build and it still sits in a corner of my shop today.
I am almost re-energized at the notion of a 550 off road machine after reading your story about this 400. I just don't know if enough time has gone by to attempt a new and improved version yet. But the idea sure is interesting especially now that I see proof it can be done and done well. Bravo Pezz, you done good.

RB,

Mate go for it, I used the CB400 frame and worked on both ends. The seat height is pretty tall but I had to raise it up to get leg room. Funny how I have no legs but need plenty of leg room   ;)

XR600 front end. Cheap enough on ebay. You may have to work on the stem to get the head beaings lined up. Extend the swingarm 100mm and get some Ohlins off ebay from an old Husky  :D

Here is a video of the bike on the dirt in 2013. I wouldn't jump te bike but as a back road blaster its smiles all day

Oh my current project is here . . . CB250 Nighthawk engine into an XL250R  8)

Well the XR460 Four has been in semi retirement for a few years in a motor Museum.

As Scrapheap Adventure Ride is coming up for its 10th year thought I had better get it back and get it ready for this years run.

I have to redo the oil cooler as the CBR900 one split. Thinking as I have a DR600 cooler in the parts bin, mounted on the left hand side will fit the bill nicely.

Then I will need pull the carbs and get the jetting sorted. I will be reaching out for some advice on this, as I need to get the mixture right. Going to run an air fuel meter in the exhaust and see where we are.

Think I am running 85 mains, 80 were standard. I also need to look at the needles too.

I will keep updating as I go. . . . .

Looking good Pezz, what are the entry rules for the scrapheap Adventure ride? ;D

Hey Terry

General Rules:

Scrapheap Adventure Ride is about having fun, raising awareness and funds for Down Syndrome NSW.

Whilst all bikes are welcome, the idea is to start with a bike costing less than $1000 and spend any additional sums on the bike to make it roadworthy. All machines participating must be registered or have a valid Unregistered Vehicle Permit -UVP.

Then make a (suggested) $100 tax deductible donation to register. Set up your Scrapheap Adventure Ride challenge webpage (only takes a minute), add photos, blog entries, etc so your friends can check out your machine and sponsor your ride.

And if you can’t find a suitable Scrapper to ride, you are welcome to ride your everyday bike and still participate in the event.

Ride to the end point destination, this year Evans Head - North Coast NSW.

We have a great bunch of guys riding each year.

Over the last 9 years we have raised nearly $700,000  :)

Great stuff! My latest K2 cost $500 and so far I've spent another 3 or 400 to get some new tyres and a back wheel that I can fit a tyre to, and the rest of the parts will come out of my garage. I might not make this years event, but next year perhaps? Will a big heavy road bike work on the roads you'll be taking? It's going to be a rat, so I'm not worried about getting it dirty? ;D

Yes Terry, the 750 would handle the roads we take easily.  8)

It would be great to have you along.

I'm also moving the oil cooler off the tanlk as the CBR one split.

So will adapt a DR600 cooler I have in 'stock' to fit once it gets back from the Museum in Inverell.

Already designed in my head

Thanks for the picture Old Moe Joe. That's where it's currently 'Holidaying'  ;D

FWIW, I'm not a shill for Race Tech - I've just got a thing for good suspension and the RTCE's are the most cost-effective mod for these old damping rod front ends.

Well the XR460/4 is back in the Skunkworks

I have it going back on the bike lift today to rebuild the carbs, lean it off a bit and relocate the oil cooler.

Time to fabricate a new bracket and fit a DR600 cooler . . . .

Then some nice new stickers to update the sponsors  ;D

PS I didnt transport it tied down on the sidestand.

Well as the next Scrapheap ride is in 4 weeks thought I had better get busy and pull the carbs and clean they horrid fuel out of them, put 85 mains instead of the 90's. Would have preferred to run 80's but the jet kit I had missed the 80's.

Upon removal I noticed some dust on the butterflys. The manifolds are a little loose and I poacked them with rubber grease to help with the seal. This bike gets ridden mostly on dusty roads

I noticed the tube out of the bottom of the airbox which I think(?) is plugged. Then also noticed part 22 - Chambered breather has a tube pointing towards the airbox tube. Wondering if there once was a hose between them???

Any CB400/4 owners out there able to help???

For reference of others got a great response on another forum

"Here ya go Pezz. The airbox has a drain hose as does the oil separator on the bottom of the air filter. The crankcase vent goes to the forward facing nipple.
I think the drain hoses had foam filter plugs in the ends or duckbill checks. You could plug them and just check them once in awhile.
Hope you get her ready in time, have fun!"
