Also, I installed mine as per the micro fiche / parts diagram which also matches what I saw in the OEM Honda manual so dunno why you want him to "flip" the pieces?

Because 1, they obviously didn't fit the way he was trying, 2, sometimes the diagrams are wrong, and 3 the way that works is the right way, and 4, some honda exhaust systems have different orientations for these parts.

Of course, having the correct collars to go with the retaining rings would help a lot ;)

May I ask what keeps the colars "hooked" on to the pipe lips?  Seem like (and I think mine are) they would want to slip off and get pushed into the  gasket.

Wait a minute.  The end of the pipe should be as large as the gasket, no smaller.  If this is so than there should be no way for the collars to come into contact with the gasket since the pipe's flange covers it completely.  If this is not the case than you have bigger problems.

mystic_1

But the split collars SHOULDN'T be touching the copper gasket, ever!  They just transfer the pressure of the cast iron collar (when it's tightened) onto the back of the trumpet lip of the exhaust pipe. The trumpet end of the exhaust pipe then presses against the copper gasket, set in the head!

That's exactly what I'm saying, gorms stated that " Seem like (and I think mine are) they would want to slip off and get pushed into the  gasket." which shouldn't be possible.

Oh, gotcha. .  . . . .gawd, this is one of those things SOooo hard to try and explain and also difficult to get pictures of. . . lol.

I should have taken some pictures when I redid my exhaust. . . those shims I made helped SO much, too (the split collars I had were a bit bent from the APO overtorqueing them)

It's difficult to take pics of because the procedure requires three hands, and few of us have the extra fourth hand to hold the camera.

:)

I'm switching back to spigots and pinch collars on my 750 personally, of which I am glad.

Mystic,

Therein lies my problem.  The flared ends of the exhausts are smaller than the holes in the head that they fit into.  Looks like I'm getting a new exhaust.

are the ends of the exhaust the same size as the copper exhaust gasket?  they should be - the copper ring should sit about centered within the trumpet flare.

lol. .  yup - thanks!   I should do a more detailed one later, as it seems the manuals do a lousy job of showing how it all actually goes together - especially with the low resolution scans floating around. PLUS, they don't have any rabbits  ;)

;D   thank ya. . .a bit out of practice plus oils and acrylics are usually my medium of choice.

I think I will do a better version of that sketch at some point, as it really would help a lot of folks I think - I know I was baffled by how it was all supposed to go together, at first.

Ha good stuff guys and thanks for the drawing.  I cant see my copper gaskets because as many have said, they are covered with blackness.  I will  take a pic in the morning but I have a feeling the exhausts are wrong and too small because I have never seen them on any other 550.  The exhaust that came installed was a crappy homemade deal with crappy welds. The guy threw in these other ones because he thought they fit.  They are 4 into 2 exhausts that run parallel to the ground the whole way back.  Just at the outlet tips, they curve outward.  Kinda like the side pipes you see on stingray corvettes:

Yes installing a header requires extra hands, so here is what I do.
Don't friggin laugh.

Using the tape or rubber bands to hold the split keepers is a must but you are still stuck with the exhaust collars sliding down the pipes so I use socks tied behind the collars to hold them in place up against the half moon keepers.

I told ya not laugh. ;D

but it works for me. Two pairs of socks keeps the collars all niciy lined up while you mount the header.

Yeah!  I  love that dual sidepipes look - that's what I have on my cycle - a 4 into 2 setup (came with the bike). You see this exhaust style VERY rarely on the feeBay and they tend to get bid up pretty high. They were made quite awhile back, I believe, as it's definitely "old chrome" - i.e. very deep and well done - pre EPA crackdown on chroming chemicals.

The trumpet flares at the end, are not very wide and I actually had to get a guy to weld up the one that had partially cracked and flange pieces came off.

Those are the ones!  Hmmm maybe I have something worth keeping here.  Mine unfortunately dont look that nice and will either need to be rechromed, or coated with ceramic or high temp paint.  Besides the cracked one you had, the small flanges have worked well enough?

And back to my picture of my split collars on the previous page...should I bend them to fit within the joint?

Sorry to interrupt but the local Maori have put in a claim for your New Zealand bunny, apparently it is "tangata whenua" (belongs to them).
To avoid a cultural incident the New Zealand government would like you to send said bunny back on the next available flight. ;D
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Damn poor Gorms has real problems, sounds like the PO gave him some duff pipes, no wonder we can't help with all our advice. :)
I'm just wondering if his half-moons would actually work better reversed (not like Honda intended) as it would give him more area to add pressure to these strange headers.
