I got a cheap Honda passport a while back and I've been doing my best to get it to run correctly for a while. I put a carb kit in this beast and that didn't seem to help much. The electric start (6V) mostly sucks, and cranks so slowly that the bike never starts that way. Sometimes, depending on the settings I can get it to kick start, and it will start, without fail, if I roll start it (piece of cake, really, since I live on a hill and the bike weighs about 50 lbs)
So, I'm trying to tune the carbs. I know some about carbs, but not a whole lot. This single cylinder wonder has, of course, one carburetor and I cannot, to save my life, get the damned thing tuned correctly. I do not know which setting to use on the needle. I have 2 carbs for it, and they each have entirely different float mechanisms. I look to someone with more experience than I to take pity.
I set the needle to one setting and I can't get the damned thing to start, I move it over and it's racing so badly I don't know what to do with it, it'll idle at horrible speeds... and with these settings the best performance is when the fuel/air adjusters are screwed all the way in. and to get it to slow down I have to turn the screw out about 1-1 1/2 turns. That does not seem right. I'm baffled and cannot find any decent literature on the old passports.
Anyone got any insight? Anyone know of common problems with these old scooters? It's a lot of fun, but it only really roll starts. Once it's going it's either racing or you need to goose the throttle to keep it running. Other than that, if you've got finesse, you can drive the damned thing all over town.
