Author Topic: Help identify year of this CL350 Scrambler! (Read 7238 times)

Got a friend who has this bike, was looking to help him restore it. I don't know much about the scramblers though, I could really use some tips! Also would like to know what year this is if anybody can help:

Looks like a later model. Does it not have a VIN plate?

Well, the stripe design on the gas tank, indicates 72'-73'CL350K4 , but they didn't offer red as a color. Check this link that I have provided and compare your serial numbers to that:

Ya, I'll have to ask him what the numbers are on it. I'm curious how much it's worth, I asked him if he wouldn't mind letting it go. Doesn't start, tank is rusty, carbs need work. Pipes are in really good condition though!

The CL450K5 Scrambler 450 was sold from 1972 to 1973. It came in just two colors: Magna Red and Planet Blue Metallic. The gas tank had a new oval shape. The stripes on it were white and orange. The side cover emblem reads "DOUBLE OVERHEAD CAM 450". The seat surface was pleated. The upper forks were chrome. The headlight shell was black. The exhaust system had a three-piece heat shield and a two-piece chrome muffler. The engine was a 444cc 4-stroke DOHC parallel twin with two CV carburetors. The transmission was a 5-speed. The serial number began CL450-5000001. This looks like your bike...

Not trying to tell you about your business, but we are talking about a CL350K4 (Look closer at the engine, it has a SOHC, not a DOHC) AND I have to make a correction that I posted earlier, it DID indeed come in magna red .

I owned the twin to that bike when I was 15. Bought it new in 9/'72. $879.00 It was the second last 350 scrambler model made. The color is magna red I believe.
The next (and final) scrambler 350s came in either red/white or blue/white.

Neat bikes...I like them both. Never had the 350 but did buy a new 450 in the orange which was a 1974 candy orange. I only lasted one summer on that 450 do to the terrible engine vibration at the highway speeds. Heck, my hand would go numb. I sold it and bought my first new 750 at that time. And so the love of the 750 continues with us all.

The vibration of a 350 at highway speed can be numbing after a while, probably a lot less with stock seat.
I had a 68 Cl and a 69 CB, they were a lot of fun. hopped one up it would easily turn 13,000 rpm...

Actually working on a deal to buy a 350 tracker soon, moly frame & glass tank, seat, etc..

It's a magna red CL350K4, stock paint. The frame number will be CL350-4000001~ and the engine number CL350E-4000001~. This was before Honda had a model year policy (so the title is generally not a good indicator or model year), but are typically titled as 72 or 73 models.

Agreed, because the side covers said 350 on 'em

didn't check the engine numbers. Haven't heard back from the guy.

It looks a lot like a 72 CL350 that I owned. I can see the brackets for the CL exhaust. The seat looks different.
I had a lot of fun on that bike. I beat it up unmercifully in the dirt and it just kept running with minimal maintenance.
My friend in Boston still has it and says i can have it back if I just come up and get it.

The CL front brake would get you in soooo much trouble in the dirt

.. probably put me off dirtbikes forever..

. basically you climb a hill as high as you can make it.. apply front brake.., & I swear.. it STARTS PUSHING YOU DOWNHILL...

...BACKWARDS.. no less

also the shifter with linkage, is a bad touch on a bike used off road.. what was Honda thinking..

fun bikes, but a bit of a poser.. find that out real fast if you ride with offroad bikes..

Which, btw, makes the 350 linkage a good source for making 750 forward control or rearset linkages btw.

Once I get my bike ridable, I am thinking I'll need rear sets of some sort. Would be cool to learn how to make some. That, is something I have yet to delve into. Might be worth my time though, as I have seen most rear sets sell for over $200.

The linkage is actually the easy part. Having the parts from the 350 linkage just saves you having to cut down a shift lever in order to make a pivot arm.
