750 Drag Bike
« on: August 26, 2009, 12:59:59 AM »
This is a pretty old post on the blog but I just stumbled across it and thought it may interest some SOHC members.
Handy for a quick trip to the shops... :)

Just looking at that laydown bike brings back a painful memory. ::)

In the early '80's, I rode a 1080 injected alky laydown (Spiderman in Seattle) ONCE, foot shifted D&K frame (like the one in the pics) was a little long for me as I was used to my air shifted sit-up bike. I was all kinds of stretched out, but could reach all the controls.
I revved it up, dropped the hammer - and the front wheel jumped strait up, causing the backbone tube to smack me in the chest, knocking the wind out of me. At that point the wheelie bars made contact and the bike shot forward, causing a 'very sudden and rather abrupt' contact between my crotch and that un-padded aluminum seat.  :o :o :o
It made me forget all about not being able to breathe.
And if that wasn't bad enough...
I promptly repeated the process in 2nd gear. Doh!!!
I coasted to the shutdown area and made Spiderman ride his own damn bike back.

That old laydown dragbike was on ebay not to long ago. I believe no one bid on it. The seller stated that the frame was
aluminum.   ;D

Bill 'Spiderman' Carlson in Seattle still has that hilborn injected laydown SOHC, it supposedly is one of the few 'real' RC / Byron built bikes. It was a former A/Fuel (injected nitro) that ran 9.35 back in the days when that was hauling... now runs methanol. I'll try and get him to post in with pics sometime.

I don't think Larry 'Spiderman' Mcbride would let me ride HIS bike...  ::)
Got to see many fuel bikes back when I was a FC crew guy on the road, NHRA had exhibition runs at national events.
Don't think I am cut out for a lap on one!

Nitro, that was a great tale!  But you also cured me of any lingering desire to ride a drag bike.  :D

BT, This was the team where I got into drag racing in the mid 60s.
Check out the first video next to the black and white picture at the top of the page.
Two faced was the 3rd fastest bike in Europe at the time.

Damn thing was LOUD ! Ran really good to, but was ugly !  :D  :D  ;D
