Had some questionable activity in his day? Is that what you letting Mary Jo Kopechne drown? I say GOOD RIDDANCE!!! The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is better off without him!

Anyone else would have ended up in jail for manslaughter at the very least, but that scumbag gets off. Plus LOTS of stories of him and the entire Kennedy clan abusing their power and influence for decades.

I guess I never could get past the Mary Jo Kopechne episode either. It seemed to reveal the real person he was, or wasn't. He swims to safety and then calls the police the next morning? Even his speech afterwards seemed more like pleading with the folks in Mass. to keep him on. He mentioned how tragic this all was for his family, not once did he mention the affects on the Kopechne family. :-\

Screw the jerk, he deserved to do time for that. And he managed to destroy the democratic party at the '80 convention.

Why do people keep acting surprised when they find out that really, really rich people don't live by the same rules as the rest of us?

RIP Ted.  Thanks for that minimum wage increase.  I really needed it.

Corruption...

He was a Kennedy so he had the legal system in his pocket, otherwise no one would bat an eye when he died. Oh well, peace out Teddy.

Ted Kennedy was to liberals what Strom Thurmond was to conservatives.  And vice-versa.

Never met him, so it's hard for me to judge.

Several Republicans liked and respected him, and he often kept in touch with 177 people in his state who survived the terrorism in NYC.

I think every single politician is completely out of touch with reality, though.  Not just Ted K.

He ran in 1980, lost the nomination to Carter.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ted_Kennedy

He would have run a lot more but Chappaquidick (sp?) sealed his fate.

Over 300 bills with his name on them.

How many laws and how much regulation can a society stand? We will find out. But a load of 300 is a real stress to the camel.

In the 60's, I heard something from a Moms Mabley comedy album that seems to fit here.  I can't imagine why I recall it at this particular time.
Anyway, she began with the statement:
"They say you ain't supposed to say nothin' but good about the dead.
Well, he's dead ... that's good."

Still funny to this day.

The Last of The Kennedy Dynasty…
As soon as his cancer was detected, I noticed the immediate attempt at the "canonization" of old Teddy Kennedy by the mainstream media.
They are saying what a "great American" he is.  I say, let's get a couple things clear & not twist the facts to change the real history.

1. He was caught cheating at Harvard while a student.  He was expelled twice, once for cheating on a test, and once for paying a
classmate to cheat for him.

2. While expelled, Kennedy enlisted in the Army, but mistakenly signed up for four years instead of two. Oops! The man can't count to four! His father, Joseph P. Kennedy, former U.S. Ambassador to England (a step up from bootlegging liquor into the US from Canada during prohibition), pulled the necessary strings to have his enlistment shortened to two years, and to ensure that he served in Europe, not Korea , where a war was raging. No preferential treatment for him! (like he charged that President Bush received).

3. Kennedy was assigned to Paris , never advanced beyond the rank of Private, and returned to Harvard upon being discharged.  Imagine a
person of his "education" NEVER advancing past the rank of Private!

4. While attending law school at the University of Virginia, he was cited for reckless driving four times, including once when he was clocked driving 90 miles per hour in a residential neighborhood with his headlights off after dark.. Yet his Virginia driver's license was never revoked. Coincidentally, he passed the bar exam in 1959. Amazing!

5. In 1964, he was seriously injured in a plane crash and hospitalized for several months. Test results done by the hospital at the time he was admitted had shown he was legally intoxicated.  The results of those tests remained a "state secret" until in the 1980's when the report was unsealed. Didn't hear about that from the unbiased media, did we?

6. On July 19, 1969, Kennedy attended a party on Chappaquiddick Island in Massachusetts . At about 11:00 PM, he borrowed his chauffeur's keys to his Oldsmobile limousine and offered to give a ride home to Mary Jo Kopechne, a campaign worker.
Leaving the island via an unlit bridge with no guard rail, Kennedy steered the car off the bridge, flipped, and into Poucha Pond.

7. He swam to shore and walked back to the party passing several houses and a fire station.  Two friends then returned with him to the scene of the accident.  According to their later testimony, they told him what he already knew - that he was required by law to immediately report the accident to the authorities.  Instead Kennedy made his way to his hotel, called his lawyer, and went to sleep.  Kennedy called the police the next morning and by then the wreck had already been discovered.  Before dying Kopechne had scratched at the upholstered floor above her head in the upside-down car.

The Kennedy family began "calling in favors", ensuring that any inquiry would be contained.  Her corpse was whisked out-of- state to her family before an autopsy could be conducted. Further details are uncertain, but after the accident Kennedy says he repeatedly dove under the water trying to rescue Kopechne and he didn't call police because he was in a state of shock.  It is widely assumed Kennedy was drunk, and he held off calling police in hopes that his family could fix the problem overnight.

Since the accident Kennedy's "political enemies" have referred to him as the distinguished Senator from Chappaquiddick.  He pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident, and was given a SUSPENDED SENTENCE OF TWO MONTHS.
Kopechne's family received a small payout from the Kennedy's insurance policy and never sued.  There was later an effort to have
her body exhumed and autopsied, but her family successfully fought against this in court, and Kennedy's family paid their attorney's
bills.... a "token of  friendship"?

8. Kennedy has held his Senate seat for more than forty years, but considering his longevity, his accomplishments seem scant.  He authored or argued for legislation that ensured a variety of civil rights, increased the minimum wage in 1981, made access to health care easier for the indigent, funded Meals on Wheels  for fixed-income seniors, and is widely held as the "standard-bearer  for liberalism".  In his very first Senate roll he was the floor manager for the bill that turned U.S.immigration policy upside down and opened the floodgate for  immigrants from third world countries.

9. Since that time, he has been the prime instigator and author of every expansion of an increase in immigration up to and  including the latest attempt to grant amnesty to illegal aliens.  Not to mention the pious grilling he gave the last two Supreme Court nominees, as if he was the standard bearer for the nation in matters of what is right. What a pompous ass!

10. He is known around Washington as a public drunk, loud, boisterous, and very disrespectful to ladies.  JERK is a better description than "great American".  "A blonde in every pond" is his motto. Let's not allow the spin doctors to make this jerk a hero -- how quickly the American public forgets what his real legacy is.

Yeah, good old politics, always alerts me about the differing levels of moral righteousness, depending on who you vote for, it's a bit like the Ford vs GM argument.

So "Ted the turd" runs away and leaves Mary Jo to suffocate to death, (no, she didn't drown, but it was nice of Ted to wind the window back up each time after he dived in and attempted to save her........) and is labelled a mongrel for the rest of his life, regardless of whatever he may have achieved in almost 50 years as a senator, "Bill the unfaithfull" gets caught out shagging a fat chick and is impeached, (geez, considering that he was married to Hillary I'd have thought the American people would have been a tad more sympathetic) yet that dumbass George W and his puppet-master Cheney arrange a fake war based on BS which involves invading someone elses country, killing and wounding hundreds of thousands of civilians and also killing 4200 young US servicemen and women, and wounding and maiming another 30,000, all so they could personally make a few more billion dollars from Iraqi oil, and what happens to these two mass murderers?

They get to retire to their gold plated mansions and write their memoirs.............  ::) ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Whatever his personal flaws he used his position of privilege to help those less fortunate.  I guess that is his biggest flaw in the eyes of conservatives.  Show me a conservative with half the legislative record of Ted Kennedy that does not involve tax cuts for the wealthy, blatant racism, screwing the middle class, deregulating the financial sector that has lead to a few financial collapses, and also that pesky Iraqi war thing too.   Oh , and running up more debt than all the Democratic presidents combined.  RIP Ted.

No, almost EVERYONE was less fortunate than Teddy and his family.  The Kennedys are the rich, ivory tower, controlling class, who truly believe that they are American royalty.  They are oppressing the American worker through excessive taxation in order to maintain their money, control and power.  They pretend to be Robin Hoods to the uneducated in order to win their votes, but their entitlement programs do more to perpetuate the cycle of poverty and maintain democrat voting blocks by using other people's money -- the hard-working taxpayer's money.

John Heinz was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on 23rd October, 1938. His father, H. J. Heinz, was chairman of the H. J. Heinz Company, the food processing corporation founded by his grandfather in 1869. After his parents divorced he was brought up by his mother, Joan Diehl and his stepfather, Monty McCauley.

Heinz was educated at Phillips Exeter Academy and Yale University. Following graduation in 1960 he piloted a single engine plane on a trip through Africa and the Middle East. On his return he entered Harvard Business School and in 1962 began work with the Union Bank of Switzerland in Geneva. While in Geneva he met his future wife, Teresa Simoes Ferreira.

In 1963 Heinz joined the U.S. Air Force Reserve and between June to December he was on active duty at the Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. He then joined the 911th Troop Carrier Group based in Pittsburgh.

Heinz was an active member of the Republican Party and became special assistant to Hugh Scott (March to December, 1964). At this time Scott was involved with John Williams in investigating the Bobby Baker scandal. Lyndon B. Johnson attempted to stop Scott by threatening disclosures about his relationship with lobbyist, Claude Wilde. Johnson also told Scott that he would use his influence to "close down the Philadelphia Navy Yard unless Senator Scott closed his critical mouth".

In 1965 Heinz began work with the financial and marketing divisions of the H. J. Heinz Company. He left the company in 1970 and taught at the Graduate School of Industrial Administration at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. He left this post when he became the Republican Representative from Pennsylvania's 18th Congressional District.

Heinz, the youngest member of the 92nd Congress, soon became one of its most progressive figures. He called on President Richard Nixon to normalize relations with Cuba. He also criticised the administration for deploying new weapons as a tactic in arms limitations talks with the Soviet Union. He also supported a number of liberal social programs in education, human welfare, health care and housing.

After winning reelection in 1974 he was appointed to the Commerce Committee's Energy and Power Subcommittee and the Public Health and Environment Subcommittee. He also served as chairman of the House Republican Task Force on Antitrust and Regulatory Reform (1974-1976).

In 1976 Heinz attempted to replace Hugh Scott as member of the Senate. His main opponent was Arlen Specter. During the campaign it was revealed that Heinz had accepted $6,000 in illegal corporate campaign money from Gulf Oil. Despite this setback, Heinz defeated Specter in the primary and went on to win victory over William J. Green III in November, 1976.

Heinz was a member of the Senate Finance Committee and the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee. In 1981 he was appointed as chairman of the Special Committee on Aging. In 1983 President George Bush appointed him to the National Commission on Health Care Reform. Heinz was also the leader of attempts to extend Medicare insurance.

Heinz also became one of the first members of Congress to call for legislation to protect the environment. In 1989 Heinz was a founder member of GLOBE (Global Legislators Organisation for a Balanced Environment). He was instrumental in getting the Clean Air Act passed by the Senate in 1990.

On 4th April, 1991, Heinz flew to Philadelphia to conduct the first in a series of investigative hearings to examine the telemarketing of medical equipment to Medicare beneficiaries. His Piper Aerostar PA60, carrying him and four other adults developed landing-gear trouble, a helicopter was dispatched to examine the problem. The helicopter's blades accidentally hit the bottom of the plane. Both aircraft crashed to the ground killing everyone on board.

Srust58, this one is for you. Yeah he died 18 years ago, but he is still the best senator PA ever produced, and he would have eventually run for president. This senator/politician actually worked in the private sector. How many of our current reps can say that? very very few.

shacolaid, I don't disagree with anything in your post but I said "show me a conservative".  Not all republicans are and by your description John Heinz sounds downright progressive but it was a different party then.
