Got a Harley XR1200? Give it the look of the classic XLCR.
« on: August 28, 2009, 07:22:47 PM »

UK importers. Dunno if anyone imports to the US.

"If you’ve got a stock Harley XR1200 and you want to give it the look of the classic late-seventies XLCR, this French-made body kit will take you there. It includes a quarter fairing and screen, ‘drag’ handlebars in matt silver, a fuel tank cover and a seat unit. It’s simple to fit, and bolts straight on: The most difficult part of the process is repositioning the stock headlight, but no other modifications are required. It’s made by a company called Jewel Racer, and distributed by the UK Harley specialist Adrenalin-Moto. You can buy the individual items, or get the complete package for £1,345 (US$2,200)."

that looks pretty good....except for the exhaust, the exhaust makes it look kind of heavy

yeah, i've not seen many, very good looking, exhausts for these. part of the issue i think is trying to maintain maximum function while keeping ground clearance.

i have to say this is one hd i'd buy.

I've always wanted a street legal xr750 but since they usually go for 20k if you can find one, the xr1200 something I might actually own someday.

well, they are both black.  :)

i don't think the kit was designed to fool any one; more of an hommage to the xlcr.

The sales guy here said $10k out the door when I pretended to be able to afford one last week at the show room.

I've read somewhere that next year HD is supposedly releasing a XR1200R or X. Basically, It'll be a blacked out version. Nothing shiny whatsoever.

If you had read what all the journalists and test riders were saying about this bike you'd know they are actually heading into 2010 and keeping up with all the rest of the bikes of this year.
I suppose you think Ducati's GT1000 makes them heading into 1974 and Guizzi's V7 Classic makes them heading into 1966.

I have read. Hit a nerve? Talladega Test track, Barbers, have seen and heard as well, from guys paid to do it.. I was making the comment  in a "why now" context. When I wrote to HD back in 1984 the terse response I received from the VP informed me that the 883 was a sport bike and I should come around to the HD way of thinking. I am thrilled HD came around to the progressive ideas that most had screamed for 25 years ago. As for your ITAL comparison, retro is cool, but it was less of a leap from Ducs and MGs modern retro offerings than it was for HD to come up with this bike. Timing is everything. And heading into 2010 when they will be widely available in the USA AFTER the european market has had theirs, well here is to 2010.

Nothing personal, I just get tired of people dissing on HD all the time. I really don't understand why people think making the same bike for 50+ years while stocks continue to rise in value is a negative. I personally think it shows how well they can do that one thing.
It's like the band AC/DC, they have been putting out the same Album over and over for 30+ years with record sales in the top 20 every time while other bands that started the same time tried mixing it up are not herd from anymore.
I'm not saying HD is my favorite manufacture or AC/DC is my favorite band I just don't understand the reasoning for dissing on them for doing what they do the way they want to do it and not letting the market drag them around by the nose hairs.

Don't get my wrong I do agree that HD misses the mark sometimes when they do experimental models, the Vrod comes to mind. I think the v-rod is a really ugly bike but the sales have been really good so obviously my opinion of bikes certainly doesn't have any correlation with what people will buy.

My dream bike is a street legal xr750 but I'm not buying a vintage one for $20k and HD refuses to release them so I most likely will never get one.

I think that, actually, both examples are indicative of how most people are undiscerning, undemanding sheep who are easily sucked in by marketing.

Not very nice of me, I know.   ;)

In the current land of bailouts I will point out that we tax payers were all HD owners for a brief time when Pres RR"Gipper" loaned them coin in the 80's. They were quick to pay it back though. ;)

To me, the XR1200 represents styling of the original XR cleaned up for the masses.
The real XR does not live long as its a high strung race motor requiring unobtainable race parts.
The XLCR kit looks cool to me. Put on some high BUB pipes for a tough outlaw looking new Harley.
I think this XR moves forward with decent handling, something most Harleys don't have.
Sounds like a good time to get a Harley cheap if ya got the outlay to do it.

It's funny, I hear people say that all the time but I never see HD commercials or advertising but I see commercials and advertising for other motorcycle brands all the time.

They actually have quite a few ads online now, I see them fairly often. They're always "BE A BADASS" or "I LOVE AMERICA." That reminds me, I should update AdBlock.

But in general, you're right - that's the real beauty of their products. People PAY THEM for the privilege of advertising for them, from hitch receiver covers, window stickers. shirts, vests, coats, hats, sunglasses, etc. etc.. They've established a solid brand, and people will pay for that brand based not on anything substantial, but on an image.

I've ridden an '07 Ultra Classic, and in 5 minutes it gave me the same headache I got from riding my open-exhaust CB200 for 40 minutes; the auto-canceling turn signals often didn't; and the heel-toe shifter was too short for my size 13s making shifting a nightmare. For some reason I expected more from an $18,000 bike.

Yeah, I'm sure any other bike in that price range would fit you perfectly and never have any problems ever.

Fantastic job of completely blowing up something I said.

But honestly...how many bikes are even in that price range? It is NOT asking too much to desire an $18,000 motorcycle be comfortable. Anyone that says otherwise has some serious brand loyalty blindness issues.
