Rear comstar bearings wont budge
« on: August 28, 2009, 07:53:14 pm »
So i have the sprocket hub off, and i got the retainers off.

Which way should i drive these bearings out? Is there a tool?
I have been using a 36mm Socket and a hammer and they dont seem to want to move.

Is there a trick to this?

I'm aslo taking the front bearings out too. Will i encounter a similar problem?

 Thanks!

When I took the bearing out of 30 year old Lester Mags...it took my friend and I trading off about 3 hours to get them out of 2 wheels. Our amazing technique was to put the wheel over a bucket and hit a ground down chizzel in to bearings (from the other side, knocking them out in tot eh bucket)...we broke a mallet and destroyed various other "tools"...it sucked

I'd expect to destory the bearings in the process...and now that I knwo about PB blaster, I'd use a bunch of that stuff...good luck!

here are the destroyed bearings!

Rats.
I was kinda hoping to keep the bearings intact.

I have the honda shop manual and the clymers. Neither explain how to remove, but the honda one does say to repack them with grease upon re-installation. (Duh)

Maybe i should just pack in the grease where i can, put it back together and ride till winter then worry about it.

I opened this can of worms because i'm installing a new sprocket and i figured i should repack the bearings while i had the wheel on the bench.

Your idea of pack where you can is fine,if bearings spin freely,no slop, put it together and ride! Replace bearings instead of repacking,if driven out usually damage occurs, can use heat to remove and install along with cold, aluminum bearing retainers going into aluminum hub just begging to frustrate you!,Ride to you need to replace, most bearings now sealed, use quality bearings,Timken etc.Good Luck,Bill

Yes, that sounds good.

Does anyone have a generic bearing part number for them?
I saw that someone posted that the third bearing can be got a most bearing supply houses with the correct number. I have a feeling if i bring them a pile of twisted and bent $hit they wont be able to match it.

Hi.The bearing will have a # stamped on both sides of the bearing. As long as there is not a retainer groove on the circumference of the outer race, any bearing shop should be able to supply a new bearing of the same #.   Rock On
