Steering lock 76 F1?
« on: December 01, 2005, 04:44:16 AM »
I read somewher in my Haynes manual that there is a steering lock on the CB750, I can not find one on my F1, was there ever one there? I can't believe that there wasn't one fitted originally?
Jim.

It'll be on the bottom yoke Jim.

Steve,
I found it, I think? The ignition and tank keys I have do not fit, so I assume there is a third key just for the steering lock?

Jim

I have the same bike and one key fits all.  I think that any key would open the gas lid!  The ignition, seat latch and steering lock should all have the same tumblers from the factory.

I don't want it to go like a motorcycle, I want it to go like a rocket!

Greg,
Thanks. I think my bike has been messed with, it has some different bits on it, F2 brake resevoirs and handlebars etc. I wonder if other things have been changed, I have one key for ign, one key for the seat/tank and no key for the steering. Is yours a 76 F1? I assume a US bike? maybe they were different to UK ones? lord knows why!
Jim.

Both of my '76F's have one key for the seat and the ignition.  The tank could be opened with a screwdriver.  On the ignition, there's a plunger that comes down out of the bottom of the lock that engages a stop on the neck.   Turn the bars to the left, turn the key to the full left, and I think you have to push down at the same time you're turning the key to engage the steering lock.  Maybe you don't have the correct ignition switch for the bike, and it doesn't have the locking plunger????

Steve,
Thanks, yet another permutation! Is your bike definitely standard?

Yes, both are what I'd call normal "standard" as far as the steering lock is concerned.

So to summarze:
One key fits all, sometimes.
No key fits anything all of the time.
Carry a screwdriver, just in case.
Any or all locks could be in different places and perform various functions.
Do a little 'key' dance, standing on one leg with your head up your arse!

Man you need to get some sleep!
Anyway, I did see a replacement switch assembly at Partsnmore.com and they're reasonably priced if you need to get a new one.  I had an old CB650C a while back, and the keys were not the same for the ign. and the seat.  I'm guessing the dealer screwed up the seat latch and they had to replace it?

Steve,
What time is it there, it must be bloody early?
From another post I have been told that the 76F had the steering lock on the side of the headstock, this is where mine is. I would be interested to see if others have the lock on a plunger on the ign? Surely, the US bikes didn't have a different lock to others?

It's TOO DAMN early!! (yawn).  It's 4:17am here in Chicago area now, I'm at work, n getting ready to go home. I have 2 '76 750F's, and (at least here in the US) they have the ign. switch and steering lock between the tach and the speedo.  I've never heard of these bikes having the switch on the side.  Only on the older K bikes.  I'm wondering if you have a genuine "F" frame.  The VIN number should be something like CB750Fxxxxxxxxx if it's a true "F" model.
Now I need to get some sleep!
BTW where you at?

Do you recall how much? did you end up getting it from Germany because they were just not available in the UK?
Jim.
