Timing advance CB350F

I recently set the timing on my 73 350F. Set points to the minimum gap and didn't have enough adjustment on the plate for the 2-3 plug point. So i widened the gap to the middle of the gap range and got the First point set. Lines up with the initial mark, and the advance marks perfectly. However when i set the second point, when i rev the motor, it goes a few degrees past the full advance marks. What could cause this, and am i harming anything running it like that? I started over and reset everything twice, and still no luck.

If i get a hold of a dwell meter and set the dwell should that take care of the problem?

Try adjusting both pt gaps to .014,then time 1&4,move large plate,then adjust 2&3,move subplate,still not correct adjust pt gap up for more advance and down for retard.Good Luck,Bill (using Honda pts?)

If you don't have enough adjustment, make sure your plate isn't moving laterally as mentioned in other threads.  There is a FAQ entry by TT...

Thanks guys for helping.. I'm not sure if i'm explaining it well. The F mark for both points lines up perfectly. Point gap is set at .014. I initially tried .012 and Didn't have enough adjustment on the small plate. My only issue is with the advance marks on the second point, 2+3 cylinders. It goes past the marks for full advance even though it lines up with with the F mark at idle. Idle speed is right around 1200 as shown on the tach. I'm not sure what you mean by lateral movement but i'll check out the FAQ's.

Also, I am not using honda points. I forget what brand they are but i can dig for the boxes.

The plate is designed to be rotated clockwise and counterclockwise.  If you loosen the the three screws holding it down, you can push on the edge of the plate and it will move (perhaps) up and down and left to right.

I have this same exact problem. F on neutral is perfect but when revving goes way past the two ||

Then breakerpoints gap is not correct, probably too wide. Adjust. But, bear in mind, a few degrees extra advance won't hurt. It can even make your bike a bit livelier.

Should I listen to what you’re saying here or from my other post? F doesn’t matter just rev the bike and make sure it’s inbetween the | |

Oh sorry, I realize that my vocabulary could be wrong according to the manual advanced is at 2500 or something while checking F at neutral is at 12 when I pull the throttle  down all the way that’s when it goes way paste | |

Is that normal?

I just rechecked my points today and I don’t want to mess with it anymore 1.4 and 2.3 are both very close to F at idle but 2.3 still goes past full advance | |. Should I just leave it be? I tried to retard just 1.4 using the one screw but it’s very stripped and stuck

You should not be checking to the F mark with the engine running it is for STATIC (using a bulb) timing.
You should only use a strobe to check the amount of full advance!

I started up the bike this morning and let it run 5 mins and shifted it in place to warm it up and it read f at neutral and both 1.4 and 2.3  and at the second || mark at full ignition..

So weird.. do the readings change as the bike warms up more?
