CB500T tank on a CB400F
« on: August 31, 2009, 10:13:37 PM »
I love the look of the 550T tank and would love to fit it onto my 400F.  Has anyone tried this or seen it done before?   Pics would be great.  I just picked one up off ebay for $30 so if it doesn't fly, no big loss.

I would just try to get it put on with the stock locations and see how close it is to fitting.

this is one on my cb550 its a little longer  you will have to shorten your seat  and make up a bracket for the rear tab of the tank.

I don't see a problem if I have to shorten the seat or creating a new rear mount for the tank.  The thing that concerns me most is if the there is enough clearance for the carbs, coils, and location of the petcock.  I guess if I had to I could surgically hammer out the bottom of the 500T tank to accommodate the coils and such.  I'll get a better idea when I get it in the mail.

PS  Shiznits, your bike is quite an inspiration.

Thanks, my coils and electrics fit well under there. I do have a bit of a clearance issue with the petcock though but, you should be ok since you have a smaller engine setup. If not just mount the back of the tank a bit higher off the frame for clearance. add a rubber spacer or something. Did the tank come with the petcock too? if not you may need to get one because its a 90 degree version and gives you clearance you need.

From the pics it looks like it has a petcock, however the listing says its no good.  I've heard its a #$%* to get a new one and the petcock threads are not a standard type so its not interchangeable with other models.  I'll figure something out.  The OEM petcock on there has two fuel outputs while I believe my 400F has only one.  I'm assuming that since the 500T is a two cyl that each output tube is for the two carbs.

it might just need new o rings inside, if you use it you can run a "T" fuel fitting to make it go to 1 fuel line.
