Do I need to stake the front wheel bearing
« on: September 02, 2009, 03:22:34 AM »
I am switching the front wheel bearing on my 72 cb750 to a sealed bearing. I read in the manual it says to stake the bearing. I talked to a mechanic and he says he never stakes the bearing. Can anyone tell me what the purpose of staking the bearing is and is it that important?

The staking deforms the threads and literally jams the part in place. This prevents the partfrom turning out and loosening due to vibration. Today using Loctite is replacing the staking process in most applications.

I agree with BobbR. But also, take a center punch, place it where the threads come together, smack it, go 180 deg out, smack it again and you're done. Case closed.  ;D
