never titled... what to do????
« on: September 02, 2009, 06:32:14 AM »
Okay a friend of mine is looking at a 2007 VTX 1800C. it has 5k on it. pretty clean... one big problem. has no title. has never been titled. here's the story he got. some guy bought it from the dealer, paid cash. rode it to a hotel and got picked up by the pokie. went to prison for credit card fraud or something like that. bike sat there for a couple weeks before a friend of his went and picked it up to store it for him... the bike had 5 miles on it. now the bike has been with that "friend" for a couple years. meanwhile he threw another tag on it and has put 5,000 miles on it. he would be the current seller.

so... my friend can get this for $3000. also my cousin, who is a county deputy ran the vin through dispatch and it came back clean, never registered. tag agency has no record of it....

how would you go about getting title for this or is it even possible at this point....

long story i know,  but i figured someone on here would know
thanks

I think the only way you could register it ,is if you had a copy of the original purchase and sales agreement from the dealer since it was never registered by the original owner or legally by his "friend" . $3000 for that bike is really cheap, I would be a little cautious dealing with the shady folks... 8)

So if you send another "friend" a check for 10k to nigeria, you'll get the bike and cash back!

It would at least have a certificate of origin.

But if the dealer put plates on it, it has a title and has been titled. Go to the DMV, see what they can tell you about it, if anything. At the least they should be able to tell you the guy is full of crap and the bike has a title.

I'm pretty sure things in OK are a bit different, since you had a deputy physically inspect it and run the tags then he techinally should have been able to get you a title. That is one way to do it here by takin it to the highway patrol and have it ready to drive since they are going to give it a saftey inspection.
One other thing I know of it ITS international title service. That is the way I have to go for my sled, it came out of a storage unit and was repo'ed by the storage place owner due to the unit going default. Its been in the unit so long that when I had the cops run the vin on it that it wasn't even in the system anymore...

You might check with the local DMV to see if they accept title service work first though.

Ok so if your cousin called it in and nothing came back like you said then its clean, offer him 1500.00$ for it since it has no title its only junk value unless it has a title, My sister lives in Tulsa and has told me of how you have to physically have the vehicle or motorcycle inspected by a Highway patrol person in person so they can see for themselves that all the vin's match and is correct with said vehicle. They can then start the paperwork proces at least and issue you a title.
Like you stated it came back not even registered so it is clean, free and clear to start a title process.
I suggest going with that link I provided above if the state of Oklahoma's DMV will accept title work, meaning that if you go through the title service they will issue you a title and set of plates from the state of Maine like you bought it there. You then go to the DMV with all your paperwork and get the title changed over to an Oklahoma title and get plates on it. Some states won't accept title work and you would have to go another route to get the title. In Missouri you can take said bike to the highway patrol building with all collectable paperwork, they will inspect VIN and physically make sure it matches with make and model of bike, they then run the vin to make sure its clean. Then they will give it a saftey inspection(not sure if Oklahoma does that, some states don't) if it passes the safety inspection they then will issue you a title for the bike and sometimes even physically install new state issued vin tag.
Your cousin being a deputy should be able to point you in the right direction to what you need to do in order to get a title through the state.

hope I was not misleading and helped...

In most states, if you bring all your documentation and sworn statements into a municipal court, you can get a "Court Ordered Title". Where I am , it  cost about $100

So, let me get this straight.  The seller is the jail-bird's "friend", who is selling the bike that his "friend", the jail-bird, bought, right?  He rode it around for 5000 miles without insurance, valid registration, or even a valid title.

Personally, I avoid dealing with this kind of people.  Ever heard the expression, "you lay down with dogs, you wake up with fleas"?

yeah, my neighbor (the one looking at the bike)'s wife is friends with a woman. she just divorced her husband. he moved out of state. he is the one who has had the bike. so i dont know these people at all. he was asking me if it was a good deal. i told him if he could get it titled, it would be a hell of a deal. but then the whole story comes out.

Ask around locally or Google to find out state law. In Mississippi we have a "bonded title" you get through an insurance agency. It's based on the value of the bike. Only cost $50 for my K7.
