carb float problem?
« on: September 01, 2009, 06:43:00 PM »
The 1978 CB750f I purchased had been sitting since 1986.  The first thing done was to buy
carb needles and gaskets.  The carbs were as bad as I expected.  They seemed to clean up well and the bike fired up and ran for a few minutes.  That was all I wanted at the time and I began to do some of the other things the bike needed.  That was one month ago.  I fired it up today and one of the floats stuck open.  That seemed to clear up, but then I noticed that it would not throttle up.  I removed the carbs to inspect and found debris in the #2 bowl.  My question concerns the #2 float.  The float felt softer than the other three floats.  It did not seem to be soaked with fuel, but maybe the float degrading was the source of the debris.  Has any one seen this before?  Shouldn't they all be hard plastic?
One more question.  One of the accellerator  pump tubes seems to be clogged.  Can it be removed from the carb body for cleaning or do I just need to soak the carb longer?
  Thanks for any help.

What are you soaking the carbs in, and how long???   Some products can damage rubber bits and perhaps plastic.

I have been using Yamaha carb cleaner.  I never soaked the floats.

All floats should be hard plastic.  Might need to replace that one if it is different from the others. The vac tube...try some carb spray into the tube and follow with compressed air. Might be able to clear it that way.

found debris in the #2 bowl.

What did this debris look like?

The float felt softer than the other three floats.

Replace that float.

I wouldn't even attempt to remove the accelerator pump nozzles from the pump body, you'll likely destroy it.  Try a fine piece of brass or copper wire and see if you can't break through the crud.
