Wheels????
« on: September 04, 2009, 01:08:03 PM »
Ok been throwing around the idea and as much as I love the rear drum brake setup I want to convert to rear disc.  Been having my eye on some mag style wheels off a 750 with rear disc and was wondering what wheels in that style will fit or could be made to fit?  Anyone done this conversion before?  I just want to get my current running 550 together and handle good enough so when the wife gets her change to ride it to work and school  I won't be nervous or worried it won't start or handle good enough for her.  Plus I want some more stopping power since I'm riding with guys on newer gsxrs and kawi's.

Thanks for the link. I was thinking about some mag wheels and doing the conversion to disc brake.   looking on ebay as we speak to try and find some wheels. my cousin has a xs650 he is building so im going to get his rear and front wheel and see if I can mock something up to make it work since he is going to get a set of spoked wheels laced up for his build.

The stock XS 650 rear wheel is a 16 incher and the sprocket bolt pattern is rather large (6 bolt-the sprocket is kinda like a sprocket ring).
The RD's and XS 400/500 (and others) use an 18 inch wheel and the sprocket bolt pattern is on the same bolt circle ( but 4 bolt) and would probably be a better wheel to start with. Using the RD/XS 500 rear wheel with require the bearings to be changed to 20mm. Personally I would use the XS 500 wheel as it has the spokes machined for more caliper clearance (the spokes on the RD wheel are "flat", where the spokes on the XS 500 wheel are dished).

 1) RD wheel (spokes are "flat"). It shows the size of the sprocket/ sprocket bolt pattern also.

 2) XS 400/500 Rear wheel. The spokes have extra machining to give them the dished look (the stock XS 650 wheels are like this also). This extra maching gives more clearance for different calipers.

I'm doing the same thing on my k4. I bought a rear mag wheel from a rd400 '76 with the rear caliper from a xs750 '78.If you want to keep a 48 teeth in the back you'll need to buy a sprocket from them(that's what i did)

For the front i have bought a xs750 '78,i'll install my VTR rotors after some work on it to make it fit.
