CB 550 charging problems
« on: October 19, 2009, 09:29:14 AM »
Hey guys,
I have a 74 cb 550 that is not charging. I dont know much of anything about electronics but i think i want to get a solid state reg/rectifier. Where can I get one and what advantages does it have? I've got DYNA coils with Hondaman resistor pack that will be put on eventually, and want to update to electronic ignition in the future. Don't know if that will help or not. Right now I have stock coils on the bike and still no charging.

Which Dyna coils do you have?  3 ohm or 5 ohm?  You need 5 ohm on a CB550.  3 ohm coils require more power than a CB550 charging system can generate.  Been there, done that.  If you just got 'em, then call Dyna and maybe they'll swap you the right coils (they did for me about 15 years ago).

Don't bother with solid state reg/rect unless you have diagnosed that your existing reg or rect are indeed bad.  I went that route, and the solid state unit made no difference whatsoever.  The mechanical reg is adjustable, and amazingly reliable.

Must have a multimeter for diagnosis.

Or, just keep changing parts 'til is works. $$$
